JWU Women’s Volleyball Caps Off Record Setting Season With Post Season Honors
November 16, 2007

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball team capped off a record setting 2007 year with some post-season accolades.  Head coach Jamie Marcoux was named the 2007 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.  It marks the sixth time during her illustrious career that Marcoux has been named the conferences top coach.

Senior Audra Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) was tabbed as an All-New England selection and also earned All-GNAC honors for the fourth time during her career.  In 2007, she notched a team-best 10.4 set assists and added 2.5 digs and 0.2 blocks per game.  The outstanding setter leaves as the school’s all time assist leader with 5,265 while her 9.66 set assists per game also rank her first in school history.  She is also the school’s all-time leader with 406 service aces and ranks third with 1,333 career digs.  She holds the school record for games and matches played during her career and she is one of the most decorated athletes in the conference, becoming only the second player in GNAC history to earn All-New England honors. 

Fellow senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio) was named an All-GNAC selection for the third time in her career.  This season, she averaged a team-best 3.31 kills per game with a .302 hitting percentage while adding 1.1 digs and 0.6 blocks per game.  She helped re-write the JWU record book during her four year career and leaves the school ranked second in all-time kills with 1490 and fourth in hitting percentage at .295.  Her 316 career blocks set a new school record and she also ranks second in most games and matches played in a career.  Pfunder currently holds the school record for kills in a match when she tallied 25 against Babson last season.

Sophomore Ashley Constantino (Marlton, N.J.) earned second team All-GNAC honors after posting 2.7 kills, 3.3 digs and 0.6 service aces per game.  Constantino was named the 2006 GNAC Rookie of the Year.

Rounding out the list of All-GNAC honorees is freshman Nicole Balchunas (Brockton, Mass.) who was a third team selection.  Balchunas averaged 2.2 kills and 1.1 digs per game for the Wildcats this season and was one of the top newcomers in the conference.

The Wildcats finished the 2007 campaign with a school record 27 victories and captured the regular season GNAC Championship with a perfect 13-0 record in league play.  The team earned a bid to the ECAC Division III Championship where they lost a 3-1 decision against Keene State.

Johnson & Wales Eliminated From ECAC Volleyball Championship, 3-1 By Keene State

Providence, R.I. – The #4 seed Johnson & Wales University volleyball team was eliminated from the 2007 ECAC Division III Championship by #5 seed Keene State by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday evening.  Keene State took an early lead with 30-26 and 30-20 wins in the first two games.  Johnson & Wales cut the lead to 2-1 win a 30-24 win in game three before the visiting Owls finished off the evening with a 30-25 win in game four to take the 3-1 victory.

Keene State was led by sophomore Carly Newton (Centerville, Mass.) who had 16 kills, four digs and three blocks while senior Kelly Yankowski (Turners Falls, Mass.) had a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs.  Sophomore Jordan Pokryfki (Wasila, Alaska) notched 52 set assists in the victory for the Owls.

Sophomore Ashley Constantino (Marlton, N.J.) recorded a double-double for Johnson & Wales with 14 kills and 15 digs while junior Kristen Gawrys (Chicago, Ill.) also had a double-double with 14 kills and a team high 22 digs for JWU.  Senior Audra Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) added 45 set assists and notched 15 digs and four kills in the setback for the Wildcats.

Keene State is now 25-10 on the season and advances to the semifinals of the ECAC Championship on Saturday.  Johnson & Wales finishes the 2007 campaign with a school record 27 victories and a 27-12 record.

JWU Volleyball Earns Bid To ECAC Division III Championship
November 5, 2007

Providence, R.I.The Johnson & Wales University volleyball team learned their post-season fate on Monday afternoon and will participate in the 2007 ECAC Division III Championship.  The Wildcats are the #4 seed in the eight team tournament and are making their seventh post-season appearance in the last nine years.  JWU reached the semifinals of the 2006 ECAC Championship.

Johnson & Wales is 27-11 on the season and captured the GNAC regular season championship with a perfect 13-0 record.  The Wildcats dropped a 3-2 decision against Rivier in the GNAC finals on Saturday.

Junior Audra Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.), an first team All-GNAC and All-New England selection leads the team with 10.33 set assists, 2.5 digs and 0.9 service aces per game while fellow senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio), also a first team All-GNAC selection, is adding a team-best 3.31 kills per game with 1.06 digs and 0.6 blocks for Wildcats.  Sophomore Ashley Constantino (Marlton, N.J.) and freshman Nicole Balchunas (Brockton, Mass.)  also earned all-conference recognition for JWU. 

JWU will host #5 seed Keene State College in the quarterfinals of the tournament.  Keene State is currently 24-11 record and reached the Little East Conference semifinals.  The game will take place on Wednesday, November 7 at 7pm.

Rivier Defeats Johnson & Wales, 3-2 In GNAC Volleyball Championship
November 3, 2007

Providence, R.I. – Junior Nicole Hersey (Milton, N.H.) was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2007 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship after leading #2 seed Rivier to a thrilling 3-2 victory against #1 seed Johnson & Wales at the Harborside Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.  Rivier took a 1-0 win with a 30-20 victory in game one.  Johnson & Wales rebounded with a 30-26 win in game two and a 30-28 win in game three.  Rivier knotted the match with a 30-26 in the fourth game.  In the fifth and deciding game, the two teams battled back and forth with the game tied 14-14.  The visiting Raiders then notched the final two points of the match, taking a 16-14 win en route to the 3-2 victory.

Hersey had 18 kills and added three digs in the victory for Rivier while freshman Nicole Rodriguez (Newton, Mass.) notched 19 kills, two digs and three blocks in the victory for the Raiders.  Senior Kori Chace (East Providence, R.I.) added 16 kills, 18 digs and three blocks for Rivier.

Senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied 24 kills, seven digs and three block for Johnson & Wales while fellow senior Ramona DiFilippo (Galloway, N.J.) added 24 digs for the Wildcats.  Both were named to the All-Tournament team.  Senior Audra Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) added a season-high 60 set assists and notched 16 digs and six kills in the victory for the Wildcats.

With the win Rivier improves to 24-11 while Johnson & Wales falls to 27-11 on the season.  Rivier will play in the 2007 NCAA Division III Championships at MIT, starting on Thursday, November 8th while the Wildcats will await to hear of their post-season fate early next week.

Johnson & Wales Volleyball Advances To GNAC Championship With 3-0 Win Over Lasell

Providence, R.I. – Sophomore Ashley Constantino (Marlton, N.J.) registered 14 kills, seven digs and three service aces to help the #1 seed Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball team to a 3-0 victory against #4 seed Lasell in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship semifinals at the Harborside Recreation Center on Thursday evening.  JWU took the first game by a score of 30-24 and took a 2-0 lead after a 30-17 victory in the second game.  The Wildcats completed the sweep with a 30-19 win in game three.

Senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied 13 kills, one dig and one block for Johnson & Wales while fellow senior Audra Vaccari (Winstead, Conn.) added 42 set assists and notched eight digs and three service aces in the victory for the Wildcats.  Senior Caitlin Cooper (New Ipswich, N.H.) paced Lasell with six kills and seven digs while senior Katelyn Rasich (Hellertown, Pa.) notched 14 set assists and four digs in the setback for the Lasers.

Johnson & Wales, who have already set the school’s record for wins in a season, improve to 27-10 while Lasell falls to 14-18 on the year.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, November 3rd when they host the winner of Rivier vs. Emerson in the finals of the GNAC championship, starting at 1pm.

Johnson & Wales Volleyball Blanks St. Joseph Conn., 3-0

Providence, R.I. – The No. 1 seed Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory against No. 8 seed St. Joseph College of Connecticut in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship quarterfinals at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.  JWU took the first game by a score of 30-12 and took a 2-0 lead after a 30-21 victory in the second game.  The Wildcats completed the sweep with a 30-21 in game three.

Leading the way for Johnson & Wales in the victory was freshman Nicole Balchunas (Brockton, Mass.) who tallied 10 kills and five digs while junior Alanna Schloff (Chicago, Ill.) notched nine kills, three digs and three service aces.  Senior Audra Vaccari (Winstead, Conn.) added 29 set assists and notched five digs in the victory for the Wildcats.  Sophomore Catherine Irwin (Barkhamsted, Conn.) paced St. Joseph College with six kills and five digs in the setback.

Johnson & Wales improves to 26-10 while Saint Joseph falls to 11-16 on the year.  The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, November 1st when they host the winner of Lasell vs. Norwich in the semifinals of the GNAC championship at 7pm.

Johnson & Wales Volleyball Posts Pair Of Wins At Tri-Match

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball team notched a pair of victories in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match at the Harborside Recreation Center On Saturday afternoon.  The Wildcats defeated Simmons in the opener by a score of 3-0 (30-16, 30-23, 30-17) and defeated Pine Manor 3-0 (30-17, 30-18, 30-19). Pine Manor blanked Simmons 3-0 (31-29, 30-15, 30-25) in the other match for the afternoon.
 
In the 3-0 win over Simmons, senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the way for the Wildcats with nine kills, six digs and four blocks while sophomore Ashley Constantino (Marlton, N.J.) and junior Alanna Schloff (River Forest, Ill.) added eight kills each in the victory.  Senior Audra Vaccari (Winstead, Conn.) added 27 set assists and seven digs for JWU.  Freshman Taylor Pederson (San Antonio, Texas) paced Simmons with eight kills and two digs.
 
Pine Manor was led by junior Amanda Dennis (Haverhill, Mass.) with seven kills and five digs in the victory over Simmons while junior Jerusha Aulava (Orlando, Fla.) notched added 15 set assists, seven digs and four service aces for the Gator.  Senior Alice Liao (Taipei, Taiwan) had six kills and 10 digs in the setback for Simmons.
 
In the final match of the day, JWU was led by freshman Nicole Balchunas (Brockton, Mass.) who tallied 10 kills and added five digs while junior Kristen Gawrys (Chicago, Ill.) added eight kills and 10 digs in the victory for the Wildcats.  Pine Manor was led by junior Rachel Mastine (Manlius, N.Y.) who six kills and five digs in the setback.
 
Johnson & Wales improves to 26-10 overall and finishes the conference with a perfect 13-0 record in the GNAC.  Pine Manor is now 12-16, 5-8 while Simmons falls to 8-13, 4-9.  The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, October 30th when they the quarterfinals of the GNAC Championship, starting at 7:00 p.m.

Boston, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball team posted a commanding 3-0 victory against Emerson in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on the road on Thursday evening.  JWU took the first game by a score of 31-29 and took a 2-0 lead after a 30-21 victory in the second game.  The Wildcats completed the sweep with a 30-23 in in game three.

Leading the way for Johnson & Wales in the victory was senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio) who registered 11 kills and two blocks while freshman Nicole Balchunas (Brockton, Mass.) added nine kills in the victory.  Senior Audra Vaccari (Winstead, Conn.) added 34 set assists while senior Ramona DiFilippo (Galloway, N.J.) added 12 digs for the evening.

Senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio) notched 11 kills and one dig in the victory while junior Alanna Schloff (River Forest, Ill.) added nine kills and two digs in the win for the Wildcats.  Vaccari finished the game with 30 set assists, four kills and seven digs.  Leading the way for Emmanuel was junior Lindsey Parker (New Bedford, Mass.) with six kills and nine digs while junior Amanda Machado (Swansea, Mass.) added 12 digs in the setback for the Saints.

Johnson & Wales Volleyball Defeats Rivier, 3-2

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball team battled Rivier for five games before coming up with a thrilling 3-2 victory in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.  JWU took the first game by a score of 30-25 with Rivier taking a 30-26 win in game two.  The Wildcats rallied for a 30-28 win in game three to take the 2-1 advantage, however the visiting Raiders tied the match at 2-2, sending it to the decisive game five.  The Wildcats jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the final game and then took the 15-10 victory to seal the match.

Leading the way for Johnson & Wales in the victory was senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio) who registered 18 kills, eight digs and two blocks while sophomore Ashley Constantino (Marlton, N.J.) added 15 kills and 18 digs in the victory.  Junior Alanna Schloff (River Forest, Ill.) and freshman Nicole Balchunas (Brockton, Mass.) tallied 12 kills apiece while senior Audra Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) notched 59 set assists, 20 digs and five kills for the evening.

Rivier was paced by senior Kori Chace (East Providence, R.I.) who tallied 25 kills and added 10 digs while junior Nicole Hersey (Milton, N.H.) notched 17 kills and seven digs in the setback for the Raiders.  Junior Laura Ciummo (Burrillville, R.I.) added 56 set assists, three digs and two kills for Rivier.

Johnson & Wales improves to 20-10 overall and remains undefeated with a 7-0 in the GNAC while Rivier falls to 16-10, 9-1 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, October 20th when they travel to New Haven, Conn., for a GNAC tri-match with Albertus Magnus and Saint Joseph College, starting at 11:00 a.m.

JWU Volleyball Posts 3-0 Record At Rhody Four Tournament

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball hosted the Rhody Four Tournament at the Harborside Recreation Center on Sunday afternoon.  The Wildcats defeated Roger Williams by a score of 3-0 and then picked up a 3-1 win over Salve Regina.  JWU capped off the day with a 3-0 win over Rhode Island College and finished the tournament with a perfect 3-0 mark.

Leading the way for JWU was senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio) who tallied 33 kills and six blocks in the three matches while fellow senior Audra Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) notched 110 set assists for the Wildcats.  Freshman Nicole Balchunas (Brockton, Mass.) chipped in with 35 kills and eight digs while senior Ramona DiFilippo (Galloway, N.J.) had a team-high 42 digs for JWU on the day.

Johnson & Wales is now 19-10 on the season and will return to action on Tuesday, October 16th when they host Rivier for a GNAC contest at 7:00 p.m.

JWU Volleyball Takes Third At Crabtree Classic
Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007

Willimantic, Conn. – Senior Audra Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) was named to the All-Tournament team after leading Johnson & Wales to a 2-2 record at the Crabtree Classic at Eastern Connecticut this weekend. The Wildcats fell to Bridgewater State 3-2 and Ithaca 3-0 on Friday before rebounding for a pair of victories on Saturday. The squad defeated Colby 3-0 and then capped off the tournament with a 3-1 win over host Eastern Connecticut.

Johnson & Wales is now 15-10 on the season The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, October 14th when they host Salve Regina, Rhode Island College and Roger Williams in the Rhody Four Tournament. Action will start at 12:00 p.m.

Northfield, Vt. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball team posted a commanding 3-0 victory against Norwich in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on the road on Tuesday evening. JWU took the first game by a score of 30-17 and took a 2-0 lead after a 30-27 victory in the second game. The Wildcats completed the sweep with a 30-17 in in game three.

Leading the way for Johnson & Wales in the victory was senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio) who registered 14 kills and three blocks while sophomore Ashley Constantino (Marlton, N.J.) added 13 kills and 15 digs while hitting for an astounding .800 hitting percentage in the victory. Senior Audra Vaccari (Winstead, Conn.) added 40 set assists and notched four kills and 17 digs the evening.

2007 Johnson & Wales University Volleyball Fall Classic Final Results
September 29, 2007

Providence, R.I. – Senior captain Audra Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2007 JWU Fall Classic after leading Johnson & Wales – Providence to a perfect 4-0 mark over the weekend, including a 3-1 win over Plymouth State in the final match of the day.  Joining Vaccari on the All-Tournament squad from JWU-Providence was sophomore Ashley Constantino (Marlton, N.J.).  Plymouth State finished the tournament in second place with a 3-1 record while Wheaton was 2-2 for the weekend, taking third place at the five team event.

Johnson & Wales Volleyball Downs Lasell, 3-0
September 26, 2007

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball team posted a commanding 3-0 victory against Lasell in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on the road on Wednesday evening. JWU took the first game by a score of 30-15 and took a 2-0 lead after a 30-26 victory in the second game. The Wildcats completed the sweep with a 30-12 in in game three.

Leading the way for Johnson & Wales in the victory was senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio) who registered 10 kills and two blocks while sophomore Ashley Constantino (Marlton, N.J.) added eight kills and 16 digs in the victory. Junior Alanna Schloff (River Forest, Ill.) tallied 10 kills and three blocks while senior Audra Vaccari (Winstead, Conn.) added 39 set assists and notched five service aces for the evening.

Johnson & Wales improves to 9-8 overall and 5-0 in the GNAC while Lasell falls to 3-12, 1-2 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, September 28th when they host the JWU Fall Classic, starting at 4:00 p.m.

JWU Women’s Volleyball Takes Fourth At Amherst Invitational
September 22, 2007

Amherst, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball team traveled to the Amherst Invitational over the weekend and notched a fourth-place finish with a 1-3 record.

On Friday evening, The Wildcats opened play with a 3-0 (30-28, 30-20, 30-26) setback against Middlebury. Senior tri-captain Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied seven digs, 2.5 blocks and a team-high nine kills. Junior Kristen Gawrys (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Ashley Constantino (Marlton, N.J.) combined for 19 digs, with each player picking up eight kills, while senior tri-captain Audra Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) had 38 assists in the setback.

JWU dropped a 3-0 decision (30-21, 30-21, 30-18) against host Amherst to open play on Saturday. Leading the way for the Wildcats was the team’s trio of senior captains, as Pfunder finished with 11 kills and seven digs, Vaccari put in a well-balanced performance by racking up five service aces and eight digs to go along with her 25 assists, and Ramona DiFilippo (Galloway, N.J.) added a team-high 15 digs.

Johnson & Wales fell to Brandeis 3-0 (30-21, 30-17, 30-23) in the second game of the day for the Wildcats. DiFilippo put in another impressive performance by racking up 27 digs, with Vaccari chalking up 19 assists and four service aces.

In the final match of the day, Johnson & Wales swept Westfield State 3-0 (33-31, 30-18, 30-28) to leave with a 1-3 record for the weekend. DiFilippo capped off her impressive day with 34 digs for the Wildcats, while Vaccari had 44 assists, Pfunder had 10 kills, and Constantino totaled 15 kills, 10 digs and three service aces in the victory.

Johnson & Wales is now 8-8 on the season. The team will return to action on Wednesday, September 26th when they travel to Lasell for a GNAC contest, starting at 7:00 p.m.

JWU Women’s Volleyball Take Pair of GNAC Contests
September 15, 2007

Newton, Mass. -- The Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball team notched a pair of victories against Mount Ida and St. Joseph’s of Maine in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match at Mt. Ida on Saturday afternoon. Johnson & Wales defeated St. Joseph’s of Maine, 3-0 (30-11, 30-12 and 30-8) and completed the sweep of the afternoon with a 3-1 win over host Mt. Ida (29-31, 30-23, 30-23, 30-23).

Johnson & Wales senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio), registered 24 kills on the afternoon, including 17 in the win over Mt. Ida while hitting for an outstanding .333 hitting percentage. Junior Kristen Gawrys (Chicago, Ill.) notched 14 kills and 33 digs in the win over Mt. Ida and had 19 kills and 42 digs for the day while senior Audra Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) added 74 set assists, nine service aces and 19 digs in the two victories for the Wildcats. In the win over Mt. Ida, JWU had five players notch double-doubles in kills and digs while the team notched 113 digs.

With the wins Johnson & Wales is now 6-5 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in the GNAC. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, September 18th when they travel to Daniel Webster for a GNAC contest, starting at 7:00 p.m.

Johnson & Wales Volleyball Falls To Coast Guard, 3-0
September 13, 2007

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball team was swept 3-0 by Coast Guard in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Thursday evening. Coast Guard took the first game by a score of 30-10 and took a 2-0 lead after a 30-22 victory in the second game. The visiting Bears completed the sweep with a 30-28 in in game three

Johnson & Wales falls to 4-5 on the season while Coast Guard is now 3-2 on the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Satday, September 14th when they travel to Mt. Ida for a tri-match with host Mt. Ida and St. Joseph’s of Maine, starting at 10:00 a.m.

JWU Volleyball Falls To Colby-Sawyer, 3-0 September 4, 2007

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s volleyball team was swept 3-0 by Colby-Sawyer in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening. The match was a rematch of the semifinals of the 2006 ECAC Division III Championship. Colby-Sawyer took the first game by a score of 30-23 and took a 2-0 lead after a 30-24 victory in the second game. The visiting Chargers completed the sweep with a 30-26 in in game three

Leading the way for Johnson & Wales in the setback was sophomore Ashley Constantino (Marlton, N.J.) with nine kills and five digs while senior Kelle Pfunder (Cincinnati, Ohio) registered seven kills and two blocks in the setback. Senior Audra Vaccari (Winstead, Conn.) added 32 set assists and notched three kills and five digs for the evening. Freshman Michelle Doody (Franklin, Mass.) led the way for Colby-Sawyer with eight kills and eight digs while sophomore Genny Moore (Centerville, Mass.) added 25 set assists, eight digs and four service aces in the victory for the Chargers.

Johnson & Wales falls to 2-2 on the season while Colby Sawyer is now 4-0 on the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, September 7th when they host the JWU Invitational, starting at 4:00 p.m.
