JWU Wrestling’s Owens & Lenhardt Earn All-American Honors
March 8, 2008

Cedar Rapids, Iowa -- Johnson & Wales University junior wrestlers Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, Md.) and Bryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) earned All-American honors at the 2008 NCAA Division III Championship at the U.S. Cellular Center this weekend.  The two standouts became the fifth and sixth All-Americans in the history of the program.  Senior Diego Crespo (Garfield, N.J.) also had a strong showing for the Wildcats during the weekend.

Lenhardt went 3-3 at 184 pounds, including an upset of sixth-ranked Nick Coleman of New York University, to finish in sixth place.  Owens notched an eighth place finish at 174 pounds, finishing the weekend with a 3-3 record.  Crespo went 0-2 at 197 pounds, including a hard fought 3-2 setback against Coe College’s Rob Kramer, the defending national champion.

The Wildcats had one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2007-08, finishing with an 18-6-1 record in dual meets.  The team captured the New England Wrestling Association Dual Meet Championship and finished second at the NEWA Championships.  The three wrestlers that qualified for the National Championship tied the school record for most ever at the event.

JWU Sends Three Wrestlers To NCAA Division III Championship

Providence, R.I. -- Johnson & Wales University will be sending three wrestlers to the NCAA Division III Championship, hosted at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 7th – 8th.

Junior Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, Md.) and senior Diego Crespo (Garfield, N.J.) each took first place at the NEWA Championship and earned automatic bids to the NCAA event.  After the annual post-championship meeting, the conference’s coaches named junior Bryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) an at-large selection at 184 pounds.

The Wildcats finished the year with a 17-6-1 record in dual matches, captured the New England Wrestling Association Dual Meet Championship, and finished second at the NEWA Championship.

No. 13 JWU Wrestling Takes Second At NEWA Championship
February 24, 2008

Gorham, Maine. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team, currently ranked No. 13 in the nation, notched a second place finish at the New England Wrestling Association Championship, hosted by Southern Maine over the weekend. Junior Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, Md.) and senior Diego Crespo (Garfield, N.J.) each took first place finishes for the Wildcats and earned bids to the upcoming NCAA Division III Championship. The Wildcats finished with 116 team points, just five points behind intra-state rival Rhode Island College who captured the team title with 121 points.

There will also be four at-large wrestlers selected from the New England region and they will be announced after a meeting of the conference’s coaches later this evening.

Owens went a perfect 5-0 on the weekend, including a win via pin fall, to take first place at 174 pounds. Crespo posted a 7-1 record for the tournament and wrestled back through the back door, including a 10-5 win in the finals at 197 pounds.

Johnson & Wales had eight wrestlers, including Owens and Crespo, earn All-New England honors after top-six finishes. Sophomore 125 pounder Mike Bastante (Little Falls, N.J.) and freshman heavyweight Sean DeDeyn (Bayville, N.J.) each notched second place finishes for the Wildcats. Senior Pete Reilly (Farmingdale, N.J.) took third at 157 pounds while junior Bryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) also notched a third place finish at 184 pounds. Freshman 165 pounder Juan Vega (Union City, N.J.) and senior 149 pounder Rob Doherty (Woburn, Mass.) rounded out the All-New England selections for the Wildcats with both wrestlers notching fourth place finishes.

The wrestlers that qualify for the NCAA Championship will wrestle on March 7th-8th at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

No. 13 JWU Wrestling Knocks Off No. 14 Rhode Island College, 22-11

Providence, R.I. – The 13th ranked Johnson & Wales University wrestling team captured their fourth straight Pilgrim League Championship with a 22-11 victory against 14th ranked Rhode Island College at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.  The match was the final home match for seniors Diego Crespo (Garfield, N.J), Rob Doherty (Woburn, Mass.) and Pete Reilly (Farmingdale, N.J.).

The evening started with a 4-0 win at 133 pounds by RIC’s Travis Drappi (West Orange, N.J.) to give the Anchormen the 3-0 lead.  RIC extended their lead to 7-0 after a 15-3 victory by senior Mike Bonora (Nutley, N.J.) at 141 pounds and the team went ahead 11-0 after another major decision by freshman Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, Pa.) at 149 pounds.

Reilly notched the first win for the Wildcats at 157 pounds, posting a 7-2 victory to cut the lead to 11-3.  Freshman Juan Vega (Union City, N.J.) then posted a major decision with a 19-8 victory at 165 and junior Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, Md.) helped pull to JWU to within just one point, making the score 11-10 after an 8-5 decision at 174 pounds.  Sophomore Bryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) gave the Wildcats their first lead of the evening after a thrilling 4-2 overtime win at 184 pounds to give the team the 13-11 lead.  Crespo pushed the advantage to 16-11 after a 4-1 win at 197 pounds and the team went ahead 19-11after a 5-0 win by freshman Sean DeDeyn (Bayville, N.J.) at heavyweight.   JWU capped off the evening with a 4-1 win by sophomore 125 pounder Mike Bastante (Little Falls, N.J.)  to give the Wildcats the 22-11 win.

The Wildcats are now 18-7-1 on the season and 6-0 in the Pilgrim League while Rhode Island College falls to 14-4 for the year, 3-2 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday-Sunday, February 23rd-24th when they travel to Southern Maine for the 2008 New England Wrestling Association Championship

JWU Wrestling Posts 3-0 Record At Trinity Quad Match
February 10, 2008

Hartford, Conn. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team went a perfect 3-0 at the Trinity Quad on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats defeated host Trinity 43-10 and followed that with a 26-15 victory against Plymouth State. JWU wrapped up the day with a 25-13 win over Springfield.

Johnson & Wales freshman Juan Vega (Union City, N.J.) recorded a pair of victories at 165 pounds, including a 3-1 win over Springfield’s Spencer Tyler who came into the day nationally ranked. Junior Bryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) picked up three wins on the day, including via pin fall in the 43-10 victory over Trinity. In that match against the host Bantams, the Wildcats had four wins by pin fall.

Junior Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, Md.) also had three wins for JWU, with two of them coming by way of a pin fall. Senior 157 pounder Pete Reilly (Farmingdale, N.J.), sophomore 125 pounder Mike Bastante (Little Falls, N.J.) and heavyweight Sean DeDeyn (Bayville, N.J.) each notched three wins on the day for the Wildcats.

JWU is now 17-6-1 in dual matches for the season. The Wildcats will return to action on February 12th when they host intra-state rival Rhode Island College for a Pilgrim League contest at the Harborside RAC at 7:00 p.m.

JWU Wrestling Downs Coast Guard, 26-18

New London, Conn. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team posted a 26-18 victory against Coast Guard in a Pilgrim League contest on the road on Tuesday evening.

Johnson & Wales took seven of the 10 matches en route to the victory. Freshman Juan Vega (Union City, N.J.) took a 7-6 win at 174 pounds while junior Bryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) posted a 16-4 major decision at 184 pounds. Sophomore 197 pounder Pat McCrohan (Somerset, Mass.) and freshman heavyweight Sean DeDeyn (Bayville, N.J.) each notched victories on the evening for the Wildcats. Freshman 165 pounder Max Klinoff (Concord, Mass.), 125 pound sophomore Mike Bastante (Little Falls, N.J.) and sophomore Hamilton Cook (Edison, N.J.) were also winners for JWU.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves 14-7-1 while Coast Guard falls to 2-11 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, February 9th when they travel to Trinity for a tri-match, starting at 11:00 a.m.

JWU Wrestling Sweeps Tri-Match With Wesleyan & Southern Maine
January 26, 2008

Gorham, Maine. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team took a pair of victories against Southern Maine and Wesleyan in a tri-match at Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats posted a 42-12 victory against the host Huskies and wrapped up the day with a 29-18 win over Wesleyan.

Freshman Max Klinoff (Concord, Mass.) picked up a pair of victories at 165 pounds, including a win via pin fall while junior Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, Md.) was also 2-0 for the day with a pin fall win at 174 pounds. Junior Bryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) picked up a major decision (8-0) against Wesleyan and a pin fall win against Southern Maine at 184 pounds while senior Diego Crespo (Garfield, N.J.) was 2-0 on the day at 197 pounds. Freshman Sean DeDeyn (Bayville, N.J.) wrapped up the undefeated wrestlers for the Wildcats, posting a pair of wins, including one via pin fall, at 285 pounds.

Johnson & Wales is now 13-7-1 on the season and will return to action on February 2nd when they travel to Bridgewater State for the BSC Invitational.

Providence, R.I. – The 16th ranked Johnson & Wales University wrestling team defeated Roger Williams, 35-3 in a Pilgrim League contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Wednesday evening.
 
Sophomore Mike Bastante (Little Falls, N.J.) opened up with evening with a win at 125 pounds for Johnson & Wales, pinning sophomore Jeremiah Mahoney (Madison, Conn.) in a time of 6:26.  The Wildcats increased their lead to 12-3 after a 4-0 victory by senior Rob Doherty (Woburn, Mass.) and took the 15-3 advantage with a 6-3 win by senior Pete Reilly (Farmingdale, N.J.) at 157 pounds.
 
In a match that featured two of the top wrestlers in the nation at 174 pounds, JWU junior Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, Md.) defeated RWU junior Jared Czarneski (Shelton, Conn.) by a score of 19-11.  Sophomore Bryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) and junior Diego Crespo (Garfield, N.J.) notched victories at 184 and 197 respectively to push the advantage to 29-3 and the team took the 32-3 victory after a pin fall win by freshman Sean DeDeyn (Bayville, N.J.) at heavyweight.  
 
Junior Andrew Hawley (Huntington, Mass.) picked up the lone victory on the evening for Roger Williams, posting a 7-1 win at 141 pounds.
 
The Wildcats are now 11-7-1 on the season while Roger Williams falls to 7-5-2 for the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January 26th when they travel to Southern Maine for a tri-match with Wesleyan, starting at 12:00 p.m.

No. 16 JWU Wrestling Takes First At NEWA Duals
January 20, 2008

Bridgewater, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling, currently ranked No. 16 in the nation, captured its second championship during the last three years at the New England Wrestling Association Dual Meet Championship, hosted by Bridgewater State on Sunday afternoon.

The second seeded Wildcats opened the day with a 36-16 win over MIT and advanced to the semifinals with a 22-21 win over Springfield. In the semifinals, JWU posted an impressive 25-9 win against Williams College and took the championship with a 33-7 win against No. 14 Rhode Island College.

Johnson & Wales junior Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, Md.), currently ranked ninth nationally at 174 pounds, went a perfect 4-0 for the day, including a pair of wins via pin fall. Junior Bryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) and sophomore Mike Bastante (Little Falls. N.J.) each posted 3-0 records on the day for JWU while senior Diego Crespo (Garfield, N.J.) was 2-0 on the day for the Wildcats.

JWU will return to action on January 23rd when they host intra-state rival Roger Williams at 7:00 p.m.

No. 16 JWU Wrestling To Compete At NEWA Duals
January 18, 2008

Providence, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team, currently ranked 16th in the nation in the Brute/Adidas NCAA Division III polls, will travel to Bridgewater State for the 2008 New England Wrestling Association Duals on Sunday, January 20th.

The Wildcats are led by junior Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, Md.) who is currently ranked No. 9 in the country at at 174 pounds and No. 1 in New England. In addition to Owens, JWU has three other wrestlers ranked No. 1 in New England; sophomore Mike Bastante (Little Falls, N.J.) at 125 pounds, senior Diego Crespo (Garfield, N.J.) at 197 pounds, and freshman Sean DeDeyn (Bayville, N.J.) at 285 pounds. Freshman Juan Vega (Union City, N.J.) has posted an astounding 22-6 record on the year while senior Pete Reilly (Farmingdale, N.J.) has a 21-4 mark during the season.

The Wildcats are seeded second in the tournament and will take on No. 15 MIT in the opening round at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. Top-seeded Rhode Island College, ranked 14th nationally, and No. 3 seed Roger Williams, the 28th-ranked team in the country, will also be competing at the tournament. The quarterfinals will be at noon, the semifinals are slated for 2:00 p.m. with the championship match at 4:00 p.m.

JWU Wrestling Takes Eighth At Cliff Keen Duals
January 12, 2008

Cedar Falls, Iowa. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team placed eighth at the 2008 National Wrestling Coaches Association Cliff Keen Duals, held at the University of Northern Iowa over the weekend. JWU dropped a 35-0 decision against Coe College of Iowa in the opener before rebounding for a 24-15 win against Johns Hopkins and a 19-16 victory against Olivet in the consolations. The Wildcats wrapped up the weekend with a 21-12 setback against Coe College in the seventh place match

JWU Wrestling Takes Fourth At Williams Invitational
January 5, 2008

Williamstown, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team placed fourth at the 2008 Williams Invitational, finishing the day with 102 points at the 10 team event. Roger Williams took first place at the tournament, finishing with 144.5 points while host Williams had 141 points on the day for a second place finish.

Johnson & Wales freshman Juan Vega (Union City, N.J.) took first place at 165 pounds with a 10-8 win in the finals while junior Bryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) finished in first place at 174 pounds with a 7-2 win in the championship match. Sophomore 197 pounder Pat McCrohan (Somerset, Mass.) and freshman heavyweight Sean DeDeyn (Bayville, N.J.) each notched second place finishes for the Wildcats.

JWU will return to action on January 12-13 when they travel to NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

#25 JWU Wrestling Competes At Gator Duals
December 17, 2007  

Orlando, Fla. – The Johnson & Wales wrestling team posted an 0-2-1 record at the Gator Duals, hosted by Luther College of Iowa in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday afternoon.  The Wildcats, ranked No. 25 in the latest NCAA Division III polls, dropped a 28-13 decision against UNC Pembroke before posting a 21-21 tie against Lakeland.  The team wrapped up the Duals with a 30-16 setback against #5 Luther.

Senior Pete Reilly (Farmingdale, N.J.) went a perfect 3-0 at 157 pounds for Johnson & Wales while 165 pound freshman Juan Vega (Union City, N.J.) was also 3-0 on the afternoon.  Junior Bryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) went 3-0 at 184 pounds, including one win by pin fall and another my a major decision for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January 5th when they travel to the Williams Invitational.

JWU Wrestling Posts 1-2 Record At Oneonta Quad Meet
December 8, 2007

Oneonta, N.Y. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team posted a 1-2 record at the Oneonta Quad Meet on the road on Saturday afternoon.  The Wildcats posted a commanding 42-4 win against Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the opening match before falling to Wilkes by a score of 22-19.  The team fell to host Oneonta 21-20 in the final match of the day.

Junior 174 pounder Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, MD) went 3-0 on the day with all three wins via pin fall.  Fellow junior Bryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) and senior Pete Reilly (Farmingdale, N.J.) also posted three wins on the day for the Wildcats.  Senior Diego Crespo (Garfield, N.J.) recorded a pair of victories in his first action of the season at 197 pounds for JWU.

Johnson & Wales runs their dual meet record to 4-2 on the season.  Johnson & Wales will return to action at The Gator Duals, hosted by Luther College of Iowa at Lyman High School in Orlando, Fla. on December 16th.

JWU Wrestling Knocks Off Bridgewater State, 22-15

Bridgewater, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling squad picked up their 20th consecutive Pilgrim Wrestling League contest with a 22-15 victory against Bridgewater State at the John J. Kelly Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
 
With the match starting at the 197-pound weight class, the Wildcats jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead as they took the first three bouts all by decision.  BSC battled back to tie the score at 9-9 midway through the contest.

With the score tied 9-9, Johnson & Wales took over winning the next four matches capped off by a 13-3 major decision victory by junior Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, MD) in the 174-pound weight class.  Owens’ win at 174 clinched the match for the Wildcats as they led 22-9 with one bout to go.

With the win, Johnson & Wales (ranked third in New England) improves its dual meet record to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Pilgrim League. Bridgewater State falls to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.  Johnson & Wales travels to Oneonta State University on Sunday for a wrestling quad with Wilkes University, WPI and host Oneonta State.

JWU Wrestling Defeats MIT & AIC In Tri-Match
November 28, 2007

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling squad hosted a tri-match with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and American International College at the Harborside Recreation Center on Wednesday evening.  AIC took a 32-9 win against MIT in the opener with Johnson & Wales taking a 50-0 victory against MIT in the second match of the evening.  In the final match, JWU posted a thrilling 23-22 victory against American International.

JWU junior Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, Md.) recorded a pair of pin fall victories, defeating MIT’s Travis Samuel in a time of 2:07 before posting a win by pin fall in a time of 2:54 against AIC’s John Mullinix.

Johnson & Wales is 2-0 in dual meets while AIC is 1-4 and MIT is 0-3 on the season.  The Wildcats will return to action on December 5th when they travel to Bridgewater State, starting at 7:00 p.m.

JWU Wrestling Takes Fourth At Roger Williams Invitational

Bristol, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team placed fourth at the 2007 Roger Williams Invitational, finishing the day with 125.5 points at the 11 team event. Bridgewater State and Rhode Island College tied for first place at the tournament, with each team finishing with 139 points on the day.

Johnson & Wales senior Pete Reilly (Farmingdale, N.J.) took first place at 157 pounds while senior Rob Doherty (Woburn, Mass.) finished in second place for Johnson & Wales at 149 pounds for JWU. Freshman 125 pounder Brian Powers (Bayville, N.J.), freshman 165 pounder Juan Vega (Union City, N.J.) and senior 175 pounder Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, Md.) each notched a third place finishes for the Wildcats.

JWU will return to action on November 28th when they host MIT and AIC in a tri-match, starting at 7:00 p.m.

JWU Wrestling Takes Seventh At Ithaca Invitational
November 4, 2007

Ithaca, N.Y. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling squad traveled to the Ithaca Bombers Invitational this past weekend and notched a seventh-place finish, finishing with 83 points while The College of New Jersey finished first with a score of 166.5 points. The Wildcats seventh place finish was the best of the five New England schools in attendance

Freshman Sean DeDeyn (Bayville, N.J.) was the Wildcats top finisher, taking third place at heavyweight, finishing with a 7-1 record. Senior Pete Reilly (Farmingdale, N.J.) was 4-1 for a fourth place finish at 157 pounds while freshman Juan Vega (Union City, N.J.) also finished fourth at 165 pounds after posting a 5-1 record. Senior Rob Doherty (Woburn, Mass.) finished with a 6-2 record en route to a sixth-place finish at 149 pounds while sophomore Patrick McCrohan (Somerset, Mass.) was also a sixth-place finisher for the Wildcats at 197 points.

The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, November 10th when the team travels to intra-state rival Roger Williams for the RWU Invitational, starting at 10am.
