The Athletic Week in Review from Johnson & Wales University, Providence, RI

BASEBALL (21-11 overall, 11-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference)
April 9              won vs. Framingham State, 10-1
April 12            won twice vs. Emerson, 10-7 and 5-4
April 13            won twice vs. Daniel Webster, 10-0 and 19-3
April 15            lost at Rhode Island College, 13-3
The Wildcats are currently in second place in the GNAC. Senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) and junior Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.) set a pair of records in the doubleheader against Daniel Webster on Sunday.  Jackson has hit 18 doubles, a new single season record.  Newsome’s 35 stolen bases is also a new single season record for the Wildcats.  Jackson leads the team with a .429 average, 34 runs and 32 RBI.  Newsome is hitting .361 with a team best 37 runs and 35 stolen bases on the year.  Senior Mike Wengzn (Manchester, Conn.) is hitting .362 with 18 runs and 12 RBI.  Senior Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) is a perfect 6-0 on the year with 52 strikeouts in 52 innings and a better than 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.  Junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) has posted a 5-1 record with a team best 2.14 ERA and he has also been a standout at the plate, hitting .305 with 24 runs and 31 RBI.  The double header on the road against Suffolk on Saturday will determine the regular season GNAC Champion and the top seed for the upcoming conference tournament.

SOFTBALL (5-26 overall, 3-17 Great Northeast Athletic Conference)
April 11            lost twice vs. Emerson, 5-0 and 8-0
April 12            split with Daniel Webster, won 6-3 and lost 8-5
April 13            lost twice at St. Joseph’s of Connecticut, 5-1 and 9-1
April 5              won vs. Mitchell, 2-0
Junior Kirsten Griffiths (North Haven, Conn.) is hitting .400 with 21 runs and 19 RBI while sophomore Kristyn Galante (Northborough, Mass.) is hitting .280 with two runs and seven RBI.  Senior Kerry Cotter (Nashua, N.H.) has a .250 average with seven runs and six RBI.

TENNIS (7-1 overall, 3-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference)
April 3              won at Curry, 8-1
Senior Tit Hudarin (Velenje, Solvenia) was named the GNAC Rookie of the Week April 14th, after posting a perfect 3-0 record for the week.  Hudarin leads the team in wins on the season with a 7-1 overall record in singles play and a 7-1 mark in doubles action.  Sophomore Stefano Kafati (Honduras, S.P.S.) has a perfect 6-0 record in singles and is 6-1 in doubles.  Junior Devin Kitterick (Bridgewater, Mass.) has a 6-1 record at No. 6 singles and a 6-1 mark at No. 3 doubles.

SAILING
April 12-13        13th at NEISA Sloop Qualifier
The Wildcats were led by Andrew Gallagher (Norwell, Mass.), Tyler Woodworth (Chicago, Ill.), Andres Benzecri (Caracas, Venezuela) and Renee Hauger (St. Charles, Ill.).  The team notched a pair of fifth-place finishes and four top-10 finishes in the 14 races.

Up Next: Saturday-Sunday, April 19th-20th at Southern Series Six (Narragansett, R.I.), 9:30 a.m.; Sunday, April 20th at O’Toole Trophy (Newport, R.I.), 9:30 a.m.



GOLF
April 11            3rd at Nichols Quad
April 13            3rd at Hampton Inn Invitational
Junior Bobby Newcomb (Quincy, Mass.) captured medalist honors at the Nichols Quad with a score of 76 while his 80 was good for a 14th place finish at the Hampton Inn Invitational.  For the year, he is averaging 80.6 strokes per round.  Senior Dustin Bride (Manchester, Conn.) paced the Wildcats with a ninth-place finish overall at the Hampton Inn Invitational, shooting 79.  For the season, Bride is averaging 80.8 over 18 holes. Freshman Ryan Myers (Foxboro, Mass.) leads the team with a 78.9 average this season.
