Campus & Community Contacts
Johnson & Wales University takes a proactive stance to educate its student body regarding issues of sexual assault and methods of prevention. Students receive sexual assault education at various times.
if an assault occurs The single most important thing a rape victim can do is tell someone — the police, a friend, a community-based rape crisis center, a counselor. Don’t isolate yourself, don’t feel guilty, don’t blame yourself, and don’t just ignore it. Rape, whether by a stranger or someone you know, is a violation of your body and your trust. Here are some steps to consider in the event of a sexual assault:
- Go to a safe place.
- Leave evidence at the scene of the assault if possible.
- Report the assault to the police and Campus Safety & Security immediately. Safety & Security will contact the University’s counseling department. If you choose, a counselor will be available to meet with you at once.
- In order to preserve evidence, do not wash anything (including your hands, mouth and face). Do not wash or comb your hair. Do not shower, douche or change your clothes. Bring an extra set of clothes with you to the hospital.
- Record a description of the assailant: type of clothing, race, age, height, weight, hair color, eye color, distinguishing marks, etc.
- Also record where the assault occurred, description of any vehicle involved, and its direction of travel.
- Seek medical attention immediately. Women & Infants Hospital is equipped to work with victims of sexual assault. This procedure is important to preserve evidence if you choose to press charges at some point. You may also have internal injuries which need to be treated. Getting an exam does not mean you have to press charges.
- You may seek additional help and counseling from the Sexual Assault & Trauma Resource Center of Rhode Island. They can be reached 24 hours a day at 1-800-494-8100.
- You may seek assistance in changing existing academic and living situations after an alleged sexual assault incident. The University will make every effort to honor your request if such changes are reasonably available.
what steps you should follow If you believe you are the victim of a sexual assault, you have the following options:
- Contact Campus Safety & Security at 401-598-1103. They will contact the University’s Counseling department. You can request to speak with the on-call counselor without disclosing any other details if you so choose. If you would prefer to contact the Student Counseling Center (SCC) yourself, please call 401-598-1016 to schedule an appointment.
- If you choose not to contact Campus Safety & Security, please consider seeking immediate medical, police or community assistance.

what action may be taken:
- If you choose to pursue criminal prosecution through the courts, the incident should be reported to the police. Campus personnel are able to assist you when notifying local or campus authorities. Remember, a police report does not require a victim to prosecute. The Sexual Assault & Trauma Resource Center of Rhode Island provides services to help and inform victims of sexual violence when moving through the prosecution process.
- University Disciplinary Action A sexual assault is a violation of the University’s Student Code of Conduct and will be reviewed in accordance with the University’s Student Conduct Review procedures. An incident report will be filed and the matter will be investigated. Sanctions for violation of the Student Code of Conduct include, but are not limited to: reprimand, revocation of certain privileges, campus service, deferred suspension, suspension or dismissal from the University. To ensure fairness, sensitivity, and respect for the rights of the victim and the alleged violator, the following will prevail at all proceedings:
- The victim has the right to a speedy hearing
- The victim has the right to make a “victim impact statement” in addition to an incident report. This statement will be considered by the judicial body if the alleged violator is found responsible.
- Both the accuser and the accused are entitled to the same opportunities to have others present during a disciplinary proceeding.
- Both the accuser and the accused will be informed of the final determination of any disciplinary proceeding brought alleging a sex offense and any sanction imposed against the accused.
note: When any one of the options above is pursued, you do not forfeit your right to pursue the remaining options. Compliance with the items listed above does not constitute a violation of the Family Educational Rights and privacy act (20 U.S.C. 1232g).
