financial information
What does it cost to be Greek? Like any opportunity for involvement in college, there is a financial commitment associated with joining a fraternity or sorority. The costs go toward Inter/National fees, chapter operating expenses, and social functions.
The costs associated with the individual chapter dues are fairly subjective. We highly encourage potential new members to ask about the financial costs of each chapter during the first round of recruitment. It is a very common topic of conversation, and should not be an awkward question. Typically, most chapters will address this issue up front.
Every fraternity and sorority is self-supportive. Each chapter and its national headquarters determine the monthly/semester dues and membership fees. Some chapters also include a one-time association and initiation fee. Many chapters offer a payment plan or offer chapter scholarships. In addition to national headquarters dues, there are also local chapter dues. Since Johnson & Wales does not have Greek housing, housing costs would be dependent on where the student chooses to live.
The average annual dues range from about $300-$700 per year. Again, there can be additional costs for things such as recruitment, social functions, trips, etc... It is also noteworthy that after the first year, dues are somewhat less because of the costs associated with initiation.
Other costs are dependent on involvement and personal choice. Fraternities and sororities will typically host several social functions through the year and sometimes t-shirts are produced and available for purchase for these events. During the school year members of the chapter might plan different trips that could cost additional money as well.
We encourage potential new members to research the financial costs of the organization they are interested in. Compared to total costs as a student, Greek life is only a small portion of those expenses and the friendships and lifetime of experiences formed are invaluable.
