why join

You will be faced with numerous challenges in your first year as well as throughout your entire college career. In this new environment you will encounter the tasks of establishing new friendships and adjusting to the rigors of college academics. You will want to find activities that offer friendship, academic support, leadership skills, and social events. Greek organizations can offer you all these opportunities, plus many others, in a single organization. The greek community is an opportune way for you to develop socially, intellectually, and professionally. You will never make a better decision than the one to explore greek life at Johnson & Wales!

Friendship As a member of a fraternity or sorority you will have the opportunity to meet students from various backgrounds with whom you can explore new things and share similar interests. Within each chapter there is a close friendship, or brotherhood, or sisterhood, which only the fraternity or sorority atmosphere can foster. This friendship is the principle foundation upon which all greek organizations are built, and from which you will receive the greatest rewards. Every member contributes to this aspect, as it combines the concept of individualism with the spirit of cooperation.

Scholarship The scholarship component of your college career is perhaps the most significant determinant of your future success. A primary purpose of a fraternity or sorority is to encourage and develop high scholastic achievement. Activities that contribute to this academic atmosphere include peer tutoring, special scholarships and awards, upperclassman counseling, and chapter study hours.

Leadership These days it takes more than just a degree to get a good job, it takes leadership experience. Everyone in a greek organization has leadership opportunities, whether you hold office on the executive board, are a member of a committee, or represent your chapter on campus boards and councils. You can learn how to coordinate an event, manage a budget, run effective meetings, speak in public, and motivate others — skills that will help you in the university and throughout life.

Social Offering a break from the demands of the classroom is another one of the benefits of the greek community. Throughout the year fraternities and sororities will participate in many social events such as homecoming/family weekend, socials with other greek organizations, greek week, dinner dances, barbecues, spring formals, and awards banquets. These events offer good times and great opportunities to meet and interact with other members of the Johnson & Wales community.

Community Service One of the many advantages of being a part of the greek community at Johnson & Wales University is the opportunity to help others in need. The Greek organizations sponsor many philanthropic events that benefit not only the J&W community, but also the Providence and surrounding Rhode Island communities. Being a member of a greek organization means always being ready to lend a hand whenever and wherever needed.
