| Harborside Village Has Arrived! Johnson & Wales University is offering a new and exciting housing alternative to its Providence Campus students. We are accepting applications for new residents. To provide you with some answers to some frequently asked questions, we’ve prepared this synopsis: What is Harborside Village? Harborside Village features 144 fully furnished apartments, with room to house 576 students. The design reflects a growing trend around the nation of student housing that goes beyond the dormitory-style living. Harborside Village provides a new choice, an alternative to traditional campus living. It offers the best of both worlds to students – off-campus apartment living with the convenience of all of the amenities offered at the adjacent Harborside Campus. Why did the University build this? The University built Harborside Village because we wanted to provide more of our students, particularly upperclassmen, with more on-campus housing options. It was our vision to build this on the Harborside Campus where we have the benefit of owning great space upon which we could build to our specs. Who can live at Harborside Village? Currently, Harborside Village is open to all junior and senior students from all majors. We hope to see many of our business, technology and hospitality students take advantage of this property. In addition to the apartment and “village” experience, students will also be able to access the Harborside Campus’ library, Archives & Museum, and Recreation Center facilities Will I be able to park at Harborside Village? Every student can park on-campus. At Harborside Village, there will be limited parking spots on-site which will be made available through a lottery system. In addition, there is plenty of room throughout the adjacent Harborside Campus for parking. We recently added new parking lots for cars and buses, most of which are available to our staff, faculty, and students. These are located directly across from our Harborside Academic Center. Frequent bus service is available from Harborside Village as well as the commuter parking so that students can park here and commute to any Providence Campus location. And don’t forget; the University has an agreement with the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) in which students can travel anywhere in the state of Rhode Island for free by showing their student IDs. Can residents choose their roommates? Students at Harborside Village can choose their roommates provided it works out for them through our lottery system. We have a lottery for all “returning” students. At Harborside Village, the student with the best lottery number can "pull in" up to three roommates (provided all roommates have made their housing deposit and meet the requirements for living in this type of housing). Residents are not required to fill their apartments, they can select zero to three roommates. The University’s residential life department will fill any remaining spaces. What is included in the apartment? As we mentioned, each apartment is fully furnished and will include four private bedrooms, two semi-private bathrooms, a common living space, an eat-in kitchen, a side-by-side washer and dryer unit, cable TV and Internet service. All utilities are included in the Harborside Village “apartment” housing rate, with the exception of long-distance phone service. Will the construction be completed in time for the new school year? Construction began on schedule and continues to move on schedule. We will be ready for students to move in beginning Sunday, September 3. Move-in times will be specified by building. Who manages the property?
What if I have a maintenance problem? Does the University provide the same safety and security
protection as it does to the rest of its residential life properties? Yes,
the safety and well-being of our students in all of our residences is
a priority. Harborside Village will be monitored 24/7 by University
Campus Safety & Security Officers. The Office of Residential Life
will hire two additional professional staff members to manage the property;
along with a student staff of 14-17 to assist them. Currently a sprawling 105.6 acres the Harborside Campus contains as much history as it does potential for the future. Home to the world-class College of Culinary Arts which is housed in the Harborside Academic Center and the David Friedman Center, the Harborside Campus includes a Computer Center, three student residence halls, a renovated historic shipbuilding factory now called the Paramount Building which houses the Culinary Archives & Museum, the Culinary Library, and other University administrative offices. Also in Paramount, construction is now underway for Exchange City, a hands-on learning lab site and a curriculum for middle and high school students that will open in January 2007. In 1999, the University built a $7 million award-winning recreation and fitness center on the Harborside Campus. In addition to its state-of-the art facilities, it houses a student lounge and our athletic services and staff. The campus is home to the University’s two graduate degree programs - the Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School which offers Master of Business Administration degrees in Global Business Leadership and Hospitality & Tourism. The School of Education offers a Master of Education degree in Teaching and Learning, a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Teacher Education, a Masters degree in Early Childhood Leadership and Professional Development, and a Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. What does the University plan to do with the rest of the property it owns around the area? The vision for the University’s Harborside Campus includes a $15 million outdoor athletic, fitness and recreation facility that will prove an indispensable asset for the students of Johnson & Wales, for the University and its curriculum, and for the local community as a whole. In addition, the facilities will be available to surrounding neighbors and residents of the State of Rhode Island. Achievement of Johnson & Wales master plan for the Harborside Campus will be dependent upon several factors, including a capital campaign that will soon get underway. Plans for the balance of the University's property include tennis and basketball courts, softball, volleyball and track and field facilities, bayside walking and jogging trails, academic facilities, parking, and open green space. How can I sign up to live at Harborside Village? Students that are interested in residing at Harborside Village will be required to first make a deposit. In turn, they will receive a lottery number. Lottery numbers are based upon students' total earned credit hours and GPA. A student's lottery number determines their participation date and time. During our Housing Selection Process on March 31 and April 1 students will self-select their hall/room assignment Additional information on Harborside Village. |
