Health Services is in a strategic position to influence the health attitudes and behavior of students hopefully leaving lifelong positive impact. Each encounter has an educational component with the ultimate goal of developing a student who is increasingly independent and able to manage his/her own health needs. Johnson & Wales University has two Health Services offices serving both resident and commuter students. One is located on the Downcity Campus in Xavier Hall (basement) and the other on the Harborside Campus in the Recreation and Athletic Center, first floor. There is no charge for treatment, and many medications are dispensed free of charge. The University's nurses provide limited health care services, maintain student medical records and make provisions for students requiring special medication. In addition, they may refer students to the University physician who is on campus four mornings a week. Free health care on campus Did you know Johnson & Wales University students have access to free health care on campus? Whether you are a commuter or resident student, you can use the University’s Health Service facilities at either the Downcity or Harborside Campus. The facilities are friendly, FREE and available on a walk-in basis-no appointment necessary. Trained medical professionals-including a nurse and doctor ready to provide treatment and offer other assistance-staff both facilities. They are ready to help if you need over the counter medications for colds, flu, pain, sleep or other ailments, or assistance with transportation and/or referrals to off-campus care. If you require treatment by a doctor, Dr. William Palumbo is available on both campuses by appointment. In addition to on-campus assistance, students can access medical care at Providence Medical Healthcare Center (off-campus) where Dr. Palumbo is the medical director. While no appointment is necessary, you must bring your insurance information or university ID. If you do not have your student ID, tell the receptionist you are a JWU student when you check-in. There is a $5 co-payment on office visits. If students require transportation to the Providence medical, it can be arranged via the JWU Renaissance Hall buses. Confidentiality You have a right to confidential health care. At JWU Health Services, all medical information is confidential and will not be released without written consent, unless otherwise required by law. What if I need care after hours? If you need care and Providence Medical or JWU Health Services is not open, call Safety & Security at 401-598-1103 for a referral and transportation to the nearest walk-in clinic. Be advised, if you have no other insurance besides the university plan, a local walk-in clinic is a more affordable option for after-hours care than a hospital emergency department.
