Video Descriptions

A Season in Hell This film is composed of interwoven personal narratives, recounted in five years of interviews. The principal character is Regina ("Gina") Hatfield, a young woman from Eastern Kentucky who suffers from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Also featured are her father (Bob), her mother (Grace), her sister (Robin) a professor who is Gina's confidante and support group leader (Mary Jo), and Gina's fiancé (Mike).

Regina's eight-year battle with weight, dieting, food preoccupation, bingeing, and purging has taken her through high school and college. Despite being hospitalized twice, and despite the searing loneliness of a life filled with compulsion and lies, she continues to accept her disorder as the price she must pay for being slender. As emphasized in the final frames of this film, this is also a story of innocence lost and youth squandered.

Wasted Youth A short video presentation that puts a "human face" on the devastation brought about by alcohol abuse in our nation's college and university communities. The video features interviews with the family and friends of Jonathan Levy, 20, a Radford University student who died in a 1997 alcohol related crash. Rape crisis counselor Tori Hilton is also interviewed and recounts how shots of hard liquor were involved in a gang rape. Kevin Price a Bucknell graduate who killed 5 people in an alcohol related car crash tells his story. The family of Raheem Bath a 20-year old Duke University student recounts the circumstances that led to his death in 1999 from alcohol related causes. A doctor explains how alcohol can cause deaths like this one which led Duke officials to alert their students about these types of dangers. The video also features statistics that demonstrate the vast extent of the problem of alcohol abuse among our nation's youth.

Eat, Drink, and Be Wary: Women and the Dangers of Alcohol Consumption by the average woman-even in moderate amounts-has far more lasting effects than an equal amount imbibed by her male counterpart. Even if it is a single glass of wine, the effects on their respective physiology are very different: the female body absorbs alcohol faster and retains it up to twice as long as the male body, which has considerable implications both for social drinking and for driving while under the influence. This ABC News program illustrates these differences and discusses the potential hazards.

Hope of Awakening Features interviews with former victims of domestic violence who discuss the various forms of violence, both physical and emotional, in abusive relationships, the psychological patterns that keep women from leaving abusive spouses or boyfriends, and related issues of fear and low self-esteem. In addition to commentary by a clinical psychologist, each of the women discuss how they finally awakened from the cycle of violence, made the difficult decision to leave the abusive relationship, sought help through a shelter or an outreach program, and experienced a healing process which has empowered them with newfound strength and courage to rebuild their lives.

Growing Up Female is one of the first films of the modern women's movement. Produced in 1971, it caused controversy and exhilaration. It was widely used by consciousness-raising groups to generate interest and help explain feminism to a skeptical society. The film looks at female socialization through a personal look into the lives of six women, age 4 to 35, and the forces that shape them — teachers, counselors, advertising, music and the institution of marriage. It offers us a chance to see how much life has changed — and how much remains the same.

Embracing Our Sexuality is a fascinating look into the conversations of nine women who gather together for a weekend to talk about sex. The women range in age from 21 to 71 and come from diverse racial backgrounds and sexual orientations. In this intimate video produced, directed and recorded by women, we see the openness and warmth which evolves as the women share their questions, experiences and concerns. The women talk frankly about sexual orientation, menstruation, masturbation, sexual fantasies, orgasms and the effect of AIDS and sexual abuse on their lives. Both serious and humorous, the wide range of experiences offers a unique opportunity for all viewers — women and men — to talk about their sexuality.
