FIT1010: Computer Concepts Study Guide for Computer Proficiency Testing

The Software Application Skills section of the test will assess your knowledge in two applications: word-processing and presentation software. You will work in a “simulated” Microsoft Office 2003 environment and may be asked to demonstrate the skills shown below.

Word-Processing Skills:
• Open a document
• Save a document under a new name
• Create a folder to store a document
• Move text (cut/paste; copy/paste)
• Apply formatting such as bold, italics, underline
• Apply bullet, numbering format to paragraphs
• Modify paragraph formats such as tabs, line spacing, and alignment.
• Modify page setup options such as page orientation and margins.
• Insert page numbers, header/footers
• Create and modify a table, columns and charts
• Insert and modify graphics
• Check spelling in a document
• Print a document or specified pages of a document
• Use Help
• Replace text
• Use of Language tools
• Working with templates

Presentation Software Skills:
• Using common elements such as formatting, editing, bullets & numbering, etc.
• Open, edit and save a presentation
• Add and modify a slide to a presentation (new slides as well as slides from existing presentations)
• Apply different slide layouts, animation, transition, sound, graphics
• Rearrange slides
• Add speaker notes to a slide
• Add a table to a slide
• Add links to a presentation
• Modify headers or footers
• Apply a slide design template to presentation
• Insert a word document to a presentation
• Export a presentation as an outline
• Save a presentation as a Web page
• Print presentation as slides or outline or handout.
• Printing options

The Computer Concepts test will assess your knowledge in the following areas:

• Computer Hardware
o Identify the components that make up the system unit and the function of each
o Define different types of memory and their purpose.
o Identify factors that affect the performance of a computer
o Identify the common ports on outside of computer case and the external components they typically connect to the system.
o Define common input devices and their purpose.
o Define common output devices and their purpose.
o Identify terminology for different units of data computers store and process
o Distinguish between memory and storage and define different types of storage media.

• Computer Operating System Software
o Differentiate System software from Application Software
o Define the functions performed by operating system software
o Identify common operating system software
o Define features of a graphical user interface and a command line interface
o Identify common system utilities and their function
o Identify file management commands and their function

• Computer Application Software
o Define the major categories of application software and the purpose of each
o Define characteristics of commercial software, shareware, freeware, and public domain software.
o Differentiate between stand alone, integrated and program suites.

• Networks and the Internet
o Define the purpose of a computer network
o Identify different types of networks and the major components of every network
o Identify the most common types of networks
o Identify the Internet services and their functions
o Define elements of an Internet address
o Define the elements of a URL
o Define purpose of a Web Browser and its common features
o Define the components of an email message and the common folders in an email system and how they are used.
o Identify reasons and methods for protecting a computer system from being accessed by unauthorized users or from being attacked by a virus.
o Define a firewall and discuss its purpose and function

• Security and Ethics
o Computer threats – viruses, hackers, Trojan horses, denial of service attacks, technological failures, etc.
o Computer safeguards: firewalls, antivirus software
o Protecting hardware and data

• Software Programming
o Language basics
o Programming life cycle

• Database basics and terminology
