Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is the criteria for having my name included in the program? For participation in the May 2008 Commencement ceremony and inclusion in the commencement program, students must fall into one of the following categories:

  • awarded degree in the fall 2007 or winter 2007 terms
  • as of April 1, enrolled in the spring 2008 term with a combination of at least 65 earned or in-progress (i.e. registered) quarter credits in an associate degree program
  • as of April 1, enrolled in the spring 2008 term with a combination of at least 155 earned or in-progress (i.e. registered) quarter credits in a bachelor’s degree program
  • as of April 1, enrolled in the spring 2008 term with a combination of at least 36 earned or in-progress (i.e. registered) quarter credits in a graduate program
  • eligible doctorate candidates are submitted by the Director of Doctoral Studies

2. If my name is listed in the program, does that mean I'm graduating? No. Having your name listed in the program does not imply final degree completion. If you have - at the end of your expected degree completion term - any outstanding requirements or do not successfully complete your remaining requirements, your degree and diploma will not be awarded. Confirm that you will be completing all of your degree requirements: review your Degree Progress.

3. Who do I tell if I am or am not attending commencement? No one. Either make plans to attend the ceremony or choose not to go.

4. What if I'm graduating during or after the Fall 2008 term? You have the option to attend either the 2008 or 2009 May Commencement Ceremony. If you do not wish to attend this year's ceremony, do nothing (your name will not be removed from the program, but it will appear again in next year's program). Otherwise, make plans to attend this year's ceremony.

5. When do I graduate? When is my degree awarded? Your degree is awarded when you successfully complete all of your program requirements. As a reminder, make sure that you submit an online diploma application so that you are reviewed at the end of the correct term.

6. When is my degree awarded? When do I receive my diploma? While it takes time to print diplomas, degrees are awarded 3-4 business weeks after the end of your degree completion term. Your awarded degree will be listed on your Academic Transcript. As a reminder, diplomas are not distributed at commencement; they are mailed 8-10 weeks after a term is completed (graduates must be reviewed, diplomas must be ordered, printed & then mailed). As a reminder, make sure that you submit an online diploma application to confirm your completion term and address.

7. When and where is commencement? How do I get my cap & gown? Visit the Commencement Website, the primary source for information on graduation ceremonies.

8. What is the criteria for summa cum laude, magna cum laude, cum laude (applicable to undergraduate students only)? The following undergraduate honors are issued upon graduation, based on individual grade point averages. When determining honors and/or Silver Key or Golden Quill status for publication purposes (i.e. commencement program, newspaper releases, etc.), the student’s GPA at the end of the winter term of the current year is used for students completing their remaining course requirements in or following the spring term. A student’s final GPA will be used to record graduating honors, as applicable on the student’s diploma and academic transcript.
cum laude 3.40-3.60
magna cum laude 3.61-3.80
summa cum laude 3.81-4.00

Note: questions should be directed to SAS.

9. What is the criteria for Silver Key, Golden Quill, or Alpha Beta Kappa (applicable to undergraduate students only)? The Silver Key Honor Society recognizes full-time associate degree students who have achieved a 3.60 cumulative average for their first three consecutive terms of study. The Golden Quill Honor Society recognizes full-time bachelor of science degree candidates who have achieved a 3.60 cumulative average for their first three consecutive terms of baccalaureate study. Alpha Beta Kappa is a national honor society which recognizes superior student academic achievement, character and leadership.

10. Who is listed for an honors designation (applicable to undergraduate students only accepted into the honors program)? (See #8 for summa cum laude, magna cum laude, cum laude honors criteria.) In order to be recognized as a University Honors Scholar, Honors Scholar or Honors Program graduate, undergraduate students must complete all requirements as published in the Honors Program Handbook. Honors students must file an Honors Graduation form in the Honors Office. Names of students meeting eligibility requirements are reviewed and submitted by the Honors Program Director, Dr. Jim Brosnan. Any questions regarding eligibility should be directed to him at 401-598-1424.
