sharp: special honors and awards program (SHARP)
SHARP is an undergraduate honors program designed for qualified day program students who wish to accelerate their program of study to complete degree requirements in less than the normally required time (this is accomplished by increasing the student’s maximum allowed hours each term). The SHARP program results in savings of time and expenses for eligible students. Undergraduate day program students accepted into SHARP may register for up to 25.0 quarter credit hours per term with no additional fee. The benefits of SHARP, however, may not be applied during the summer term, during full-time practicum or internship terms, or toward any independent study course.

Eligible students must apply for this program (108K PDF) through Student Academic Services by the first day of the term of intended SHARP enrollment. The following students are eligible to apply for SHARP.

1. Incoming freshmen who are graduates of approved secondary schools with
honors, have been elected to their state or national honor society, or have
maintained a minimum overall average of 85.

2. Students at Johnson & Wales who have achieved a 3.40 cumulative GPA by the second term of full-time regular matriculation and who have maintained a 3.40 cumulative GPA for all consecutive and subsequent terms of matriculation.

3. New transfer students who maintained full-time enrollment at a previous
institution and each term earned a cumulative GPA equivalent to Dean’s List
status for that institution.

Upon acceptance into the program, it is the student's responsibility (and discretion) to register additional credits (course registration is limited to space and availability). Preferred scheduling and graduation acceleration cannot be guaranteed. Furthermore, failure to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.40 or better after each term will cause the student to become permanently ineligible for the benefits provided by SHARP. Student Academic Services will notify students of their withdrawal from the SHARP program via their J&W e-mail account only and it is the student’s responsibility to drop extra credits, if registered, to avoid incurring additional charges. Students who are denied or become ineligible for SHARP may not reapply (eligibility is permanently lost).
