A Guide to Free Scholarship Searches

  • Incoming or potential freshmen are encouraged to check with their high school guidance counselors and school libraries for additional scholarship information.
  • We also suggest checking with your state’s higher education agency for information on the state's education programs, colleges and universities, financial aid assistance programs, grants, scholarships, continuing education programs, and career opportunities. Look up your state’s higher ed. agency at: http://wdcrobcolp01.ed.gov/Programs/EROD/org_list.cfm?category_cd=SHE.
  • Please be sure to read each website’s privacy terms and conditions carefully before submitting any personal information.

Search Tips
Now is the time to start your scholarship searches for the next academic year. Share your search tips with colleagues and plan ahead! Do not worry if you do not receive a particular scholarship; many scholarships allow applicants to apply again next year.

  • Follow the guidelines to help make your scholarship search a successful one.
  • Strictly observe deadlines and submit applications early.
  • Be honest! Be truthful about grades, experiences, memberships, and qualifications.
  • Proofread your application / summary. Spell check is great, but a trained human eye can catch grammatical errors. Ask an instructor or a representative from Career Development to proofread your information before submitting it for final review by a Scholarship Committee.
  • Keep copies of everything you send out. Create a tracking system to monitor outgoing and incoming applications.
  • Review mainstream sources of funds and be creative. Think about what makes you unique and find groups that value that difference.
