Students who receive a Federal Work-Study Award have the opportunity to work on campus or off campus in a Community Service Work-Study position to earn up to the award amount.

On-Campus Departments throughout the University employ work-study students in various types of positions. Typically these positions include, but are not limited to, general office work, data entry, dining hall, and other food service positions.

Community Service Johnson & Wales University encourages students to involve themselves in community service efforts. Community Service Work-Study allows students to earn their work-study funds at local non-profit agencies that serve to improve the lives of community residents. Positions may include working with children, aiding the homeless, assisting the elderly or other individuals that need assistance.

FAQs

how do i receive federal work-study? Federal Work-Study is a financial aid award given to qualified undergraduate students. Students must complete the Free Application for Free Student Aid (FAFSA) for the appropriate academic year. Visit Student Financial Services for more information on eligibility and allocation requirements.

how do i receive my work-study job? Your campus' student employment representative administers work-study placements. At the time you receive your placement, you will receive contact information listing the supervisor, department, location, and the telephone number. If you are interested in participating in the Community Service Work-Study Program, inquire about available positions at your campus. Returning students that receive work-study for the upcoming year  are generally able to choose their job through each campuses placement process held specifically for returning students. Contact your campus’ student employment representative for specific information about where and when.

what will i be doing as a federal work-study participant? Departments through out the University employ work-study students in various types of positions. Typically, these positions include, but are not limited to office work, data entry, dining hall and other food service positions. Your supervisor can provide you with more specific information on your job responsibilities.

can i change my work-study job? As a general rule, students are not allowed to transfer their assignments. The Federal Work-Study Program is designed to allow students to work around their academic schedule; it is sometimes necessary for the student to accept a position that may not be his/her first job choice. Some extenuating circumstances that would warrant a job transfer and can only be authorized by the designated campus student employment representative.

how many hours am i allowed to work each week? The maximum number of hours allowed each week is based upon your Federal Work-Study Award. Your maximum hours per week are determined to allow you to earn the entire amount of the award during the full academic year to allow you to work consistently through out the year.

how do i record and submit hours that i work? Federal Work-Study participants are given timecards to record hours worked. At the end of the bi-weekly pay period, your timecards are submitted and you will receive a pay check on the designated pay date.

how do i obtain my timecards? Federal Work-Study participants receive their initial timecards when they receive their work-study job placement. You must present the timecards to your supervisor. Once in the payroll system, timecards will be sent directly to your supervisor.

can i make up hours that i have missed? Generally students who do not work their assigned hours will not be allowed to make them up at a later time. If you are participating in the Co-op or Practicum Program, contact your campus' student employment representative as soon as you are accepted, to have your hours recalculated in order to earn your entire Federal Work-Study Award.

how can i participate in the community service work-study program? Students that are given a Federal Work-Study Award as part of their financial aid package can choose to earn their funds by working in the community. Speak with your campus' student employment representative about available sites and opportunities.

do i need to provide my own transportation to my community service work-study site? Yes, students are responsible for providing their own transportation. Typically, positions are close to Johnson & Wales University campuses. There is commuting time that should be considered when choosing to participate in the program. Commuting to your site by car or bus will be required should the position not be within walking distance of your residence.

can i use my community service work-study job as my community service learning requirement? No, it cannot be used to meet your academic requirement.
