There is no fee to apply to Johnson & Wales University.

When is the application deadline?

The application deadline for Early Action is November 1. Early Action decisions will be released beginning November 15. Application and transcripts must be received by the deadline. Students that do not meet the deadline will be placed in the regular (rolling) admissions applicant pool.

Rolling Admissions offers applicants a deadline-free application and decision process. Applications for the Fall Term received after Nov. 1 will be reviewed on a rolling basis; Admissions will begin releasing decisions on December 1. Students are encouraged to complete the application process as soon as possible. 

What do I send to JWU to apply?

You must submit:

  • A completed application
  • Official high school transcripts and proof of high school completion

Do you require ACT or SAT scores?*

ACT or SAT scores are optional for general admission.
However, scores from at least one of these standardized tests are required for Honors admission.
*Please refer to the course catalog for majors that may require SAT/ACT scores for admission

When do I need to choose a major?

Indicate a major on your application to receive the appropriate information from JWU.

If you want to change your major prior to enrolling, contact Admissions before the start of the term.

Do I apply to each campus I’m interested in?

You only need to apply to JWU once. Acceptance is valid at any of our 4 campuses (unless otherwise specified for certain majors).

What happens after I submit my application?

  1. Admissions will process your admissions file.
  2. An evaluation will be completed by an admissions officer.
  3. We will contact you if there is a need to receive any additional documentation.

What is the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)?

The following students attending JWU are required to have health insurance coverage that is accepted in the United States (and the state in which the student attends class):

  • All international, registered, undergraduate day students
  • All domestic, registered, undergraduate day students
  • All students enrolled in the Physician Assistant Studies degree program
  • All international graduate/doctoral students
  • All students enrolled in Counseling MS program

All students who are required to have health insurance are initially enrolled in and charged for SHIP.

Opt Out
If you have health insurance coverage through another means (i.e. a parent’s health insurance or an employer program), you can opt out of SHIP by demonstrating proof of coverage:

IMPORTANT: Before waiving SHIP, be sure that your current health insurance plan is accepted in the state in which you attend class and fully covers all your medical needs.

You must submit a new waiver form each academic year. Students who are required to have health insurance and do not waive the JWU plan will be charged for it.

What other documents are REQUIRED for international students?

Applicants who are not US citizens or permanent residents of the US must meet the same admissions requirements as all other applicants.
In addition, you must supply the following:
    1. Official, sealed high school and college transcripts/marksheets
If you have not yet graduated from secondary school, submit a transcript showing all completed work and/or official examination results as issued from the examination board.
    2. Submit official proof of high school graduation prior to enrollment
    3. Declaration of financial support for undergraduate or graduate students, signed by both the applicant and the sponsor
    4. Official bank statement showing the availability of funds for one academic year. Bank statements cannot be older than three months from the date of issue.
    5. Copy of biographical section of valid passport
    6. Certified copy of scores from ONE of the following:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of at least 550 (pen/paper) or 80 (Internet-based)
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) of at least 6.5
  • Completion of English Language School (ELS) Level 112.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) of at least 53

JWU’s school TOEFL code is 3465.
All of the above must be original, certified documents.
    • If the original document is not available, true copies of the original that have been certified by your school are also acceptable.
    • Faxed or scanned copies are not considered original documents.

Do I need to send a translation of my transcript?

Only if it is not in English. Every document you submit in your native language must be accompanied by a word-for-word, certified (or official) English translation. The translation should not be interpretive, nor should it try to convert the original grades into US-style grades.

Where can I get an official translation for the required documentation?

In some countries, official translations are only issued by the school; in others, official government translators issue official translations.

For countries that do not offer translations through a government network, you will need to find a private translation service to issue the translation. We suggest you check with your local Education USA office to see if they offer translations or can refer you to a service.

Official transcripts or examinations should be sent directly from the school or examination board.

Will you accept a notary public translation?

Documents from a notary public are not considered official. Official transcripts or examination results should be sent directly from the school or examination board.

EEP Program

Is there a deadline to apply?

No, EEP is under the same rolling admissions policy as freshmen applications at Johnson & Wales. However, it’s a good idea to have the application process completed prior to the end of your junior year of high school so all course requirements along with the EEP agreement can be completed and signed by school officials.

Do I have to live on campus?

For the Providence and Charlotte campuses: No, you do not have to live on campus if you live within a 50 mile radius of campus

For the Denver campus: No, you do not have to live on campus if you live within a 20 mile radius of campus.

For the North Miami campus: No, you do not have to live on campus. There is no distance requirement.

Can I participate in EEP online?

No, you must be a resident student. The University does not offer online courses for the program.

What program/major can I take?

You are eligible to apply for any major.

Can I apply for Federal Financial Aid?

EEP students cannot apply for Federal Financial Aid. Students are unable to apply for Federal Aid until October 1st of your senior year of high school.

What aid does Johnson & Wales offer?

Through EEP, first-year tuition costs will be half the regular tuition set for that year. You will be eligible for JWU merit scholarships only, which will be 50% of your total freshman year award. Tuition for your following three years will be the cost set for each year, and you will receive your full merit scholarships. You will also be able to file the FAFSA and be eligible to receive federal aid and possible need-based institutional aid. Students are not eligible for federal financial aid during their first year.

Is there any other aid available?

The University offers a ten month payment plan. Students are encouraged to apply for local scholarships.

Is there any distinction made between an EEP student and the general student population?

No, you are part of the freshman class with no distinction made except for housing where we try to dorm EEP students with other EEP students.

If I do not like the program can I return to my high school?

Yes, you still need to earn your high school diploma.

Accelerated Master's Program (formerly 4+1 Program)

Can I finish Graduate Studies in one year after I complete the Accelerated Master's Program?

Most students can finish between 15-18 months depending on when you begin the Accelerated Master's Program and full-time Graduate Studies. For instance, if you are able to complete two Accelerated Master's classes, you will need 8-10 additional regular Graduate classes which can be accomplished in three or four semesters. Students who opt to attend Graduate Studies on a part time basis will require more time to complete the program.

How many credits are considered “full time” in Graduate School?

Nine credits per term is considered full time.

Can I take more than 3 classes per term to accelerate my program?

While in the Accelerated Master's Program, students may only take 1 graduate level class per semester (in addition to their regular UG classes). Students who have completed the Accelerated Master's Program and achieve a 3.5 GPA (in their first semester of full-time graduate studies) are eligible to take more than 3 courses per term with permission from their academic counselor.

Can I skip a semester of taking the free Accelerated Master's graduate class?

Yes, but you would not be able to enroll in the free Accelerated Master's graduate class at a later date.  Please note, you are only able to take two free Accelerated Master's graduate classes while you are enrolled as an undergraduate student. There will be no exceptions where students will be able to take two free Accelerated Master's graduate courses per semester.  

How many free Accelerated Master's graduate courses do I take per term?

You will take one free Accelerated Master's graduate course per semester while you are enrolled as a full time undergraduate student.

I have less than three trimesters left of my senior year, can I still enroll in the Accelerated Master's Program?

Yes.  However, you will not be eligible to take both free Accelerated Mater's classes; you may only take one.  Please note, you must have a 3.0 GPA and taken all the foundation courses necessary for enrollment.

How do I apply for the Accelerated Master's Program?

  • Complete the online graduate application
  • Download the Accelerated Master's Acknowledgement Form. Have it completed and signed by your academic advisor. Please contact SAS to set up your appointment.
  • Submit 2 letters of recommendation from individuals qualified to acknowledge your potential for successful completion of the graduate program. These may be faxed or emailed to Graduate Admissions.
  • Submit a Statement of Purpose (500 words)

Can I take time off between the Accelerated Master's Program and starting regular Graduate Studies?

Yes, however, you must consult with your academic counselor to follow proper procedures.

Do I need to maintain a certain GPA in the Accelerated Master's Program?

Yes, you must maintain a 3.0 GPA while in the program.

 

I am an international student. How does this affect my visa status or I-20?

It does not change your visa status while you are in the Accelerated Master's Program. Upon completion of your Bachelor’s degree, you will need to provide new documentation for the I-20 reflecting your graduate student status. Please notify International Student Services that you will be participating in the Accelerated Master's Program.

Are scholarships available for Accelerated Master's students?

No, Accelerated Master's students are not eligible for scholarships.  However, the free classes you take amount to a significant tuition savings.

What are the eligibility requirements for the Accelerated Master's Program?

Requirements for the program options are listed below.

Your application is valid for one year after you submit it. If you do not enter during that time, you will need to update your file with Admissions.

Is financial aid available?

Yes. In order to be eligible for financial aid programs, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress
  • Be enrolled in a degree or certificate program
  • Be enrolled on a least a half-time basis 
  • Be a US citizen, permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen
  • Not owe a refund on a Federal Pell Grant or be in default on a Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Subsidized or Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, Parent Loan or Supplemental Loan

Are scholarships available?

Providence Campus: Each year, we award a limited number of scholarships to Providence Campus applicants who are:

  • Accepted as full-time students
  • Reflect an ability to excel in their chosen program

$1,000 will be credited to your account in equal installments over 3 consecutive terms. (You cannot receive more than a total of $1,000.)

You must maintain a full-time status while in receipt of the scholarship.

To apply: Students must include a resume with their application to be considered. Scholarship recipients are notified with the letter of acceptance.

How do I complete my MBA, MS or doctoral application?

How do I complete my PA application?

Apply online via Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA).

Can I be accepted to the university without TOEFL scores?

Providence: You will be placed in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program if the minimum TOEFL score is not submitted.

Denver Campus: This campus does not offer an ESL program. If you do not meet the minimum TOEFL requirements, you may attend the ELS Language Center in Denver, Colo., or any local ESL provider of your choice. Upon successful completion of ESL Level 112 (Intensive), you may then transfer to JWU’s Denver Campus.

How can I qualify for English as a Second Language (ESL) exemption?

To qualify for ESL exemption, applicants whose native language is not English or individuals who did not graduate from an American university must:

  • Submit passing TOEFL IBT/IELTS scores with all individual scores also passing
  • Have completed the English Language School (ELS) Level 112

What happens after I submit my international application?

  1. Once we have received all of your materials, we will process and evaluate your application.
  2. We will contact you if any documents are missing.
  3. You will receive an acceptance decision approximately 2 weeks after all documents have been received by our office.

How long is my application valid?

Your application is valid for one year after you submit it. If you do not enter during that time, you will need to update your file with Admissions.

 

If you have applied and been accepted to the university but, for various reasons, wish to postpone your enrollment, we will retain your application materials and will honor admissions acceptances for up to 2 years. You may defer your acceptance one time; JWU will issue a maximum of 2 (two) I-20s per student.  If you have received two (2) I-20s from JWU and have not enrolled, your acceptance will be rescinded.

 

When will I receive my acceptance letter and I-20?

Once all required documents have been submitted and evaluated, your acceptance letter and I-20 will be sent bycourier

Will JWU grant an extension on my enrollment date?

We do NOT permit extensions (this is to ensure that all students are scheduled properly and have access to pre-arrival and arrival services).

If you cannot arrive by the requested date, we advise that you defer to the next available term. That procedure includes:

  • The return of your I-20
  • A statement requesting a term deferal
  • An updated bank statement

What type of accreditation does JWU have?

JWU is accredited by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC).

Can I transfer my college credits?

Yes. JWU offers a liberal transfer credit allowance.

Transfer credit is evaluated by Student Academic & Financial Services (SAFS). To receive an evaluation:

  1. Set up an appointment with SAFS
  2. Mail us a transcript. We will evaluate the transfer credit and mail you a copy.

Do you offer credit for life or work experience?

Yes: JWU offers “prior learning assessment credit,” allowing you to earn credits for the knowledge or skills you’ve mastered through:

  • Employment
  • Volunteer work
  • Travel programs
  • Organizations
  • Other comparable sources

Credit can be earned through portfolio development or with departmental challenge examinations (credit by examination).

JWU also accepts College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) examination credit.

When do Continuing Education classes meet?

Providence Campus 

Most academic courses meet Monday – Thursday from 6:00- 9:30 pm. We offer a limited selection on Saturday morning and afternoon. Some academic courses may be offered online. Culinary/Baking & Pastry Art labs meet on Sunday from 7am – 6:30 pm. Please call 401-598-2300 for class schedule.

How long will it take to obtain my degree?

The answer will differ for each individual, based on various factors.

Transfer credit and prior learning credit will reduce the length of a program.

Do I pay for Continuing Education classes one at a time?

Each term you will be charged for the amount of academic or lab credit you are enrolled in on a per-credit hour basis

Should I bother filling out the FAFSA even if I have a high income?

Yes. ALL students should complete a FAFSA — not all financial aid awards are based on need.

Should I pay someone to do my FAFSA for me?

No. The FAFSA is free to apply. If you need help, you are designated a financial planner at JWU.

What scholarships or Pell grants are available for non-traditional students?

All students should complete a FAFSA to determine their eligibly for any type of financial aid, including Pell grant funds.

I’m in the military. What does JWU offer me?

We work with the following federal education benefit programs for veterans and active duty personnel:

  • GI Bill
  • Yellow Ribbon Program
  • Post-9-11 GI Bill

We have two VA-certifying officials on campus that can help you through the process of applying and utilizing these funds.

We also work with veterans on vocational rehab.

What if I receive employer assistance but they won’t reimburse until after my grade has posted?

We can accept a partial payment of at least 25%. You can then sign a probation agreement to pay the remaining balance at the beginning of the next term.

If I am concurrently enrolled at a community college and JWU, how does this affect my funding?

You can only receive federal financial aid at one institution at a time.

Can I apply for financial aid even if I receive tuition reimbursement?

Yes. Complete the FAFSA and we will use that to determine your eligibility for financial aid. Tuition reimbursement will be taken into consideration.

If I decide not to apply for financial aid now, can I apply any time throughout the year?

Yes, you can apply for financial aid up until your last date of attendance.

Does financial aid cover books?

If you have more financial aid than you have charges, you can use our book voucher program to use your financial aid to pay for books.

Does financial aid cover PLA or CLEP credits?

You can request a refund check the 5th week of each term to use for other educational expenses, including Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) or College-Level Examination Program (CLEP).

What is the difference between subsidized and unsubsidized loans?

Subsidized means the federal government will pay the interest on the borrower’s behalf while the borrower is enrolled in school; the federal government does not pay the interest on unsubsidized loans. During that time the borrower can choose to make quarterly interest payments or to capitalize the interest.

What if I lost my job, and last year’s taxes no longer reflect my current financial situation?

Work with your JWU financial planner on a Special Circumstances appeal to determine if you are eligible for any additional financial aid due to the change of your financial situation.

What if I am eligible for some financial aid, but cannot cover the remainder?

Your designated financial planner will help you with various payment plans, as well as private loan options.

What if I am on financial aid and take a break?

You will need to notify your financial planner. We will cancel any future financial aid disbursements you may have been expecting.

Then, when you resume your studies, work with your financial planner to determine if you need to reapply for FAFSA (and/or if we need any additional documents).

How long do I have after graduating before I will have to start paying back my loans?

Upon completion of your degree, you must complete an Exit Interview to ensure that you are aware of your rights and responsibilities as a Federal Student Loan borrower.

You will then have a 6-month grace period before you have to begin payments.

*Do you require ACT or SAT scores?

ACT or SAT scores are optional for general admission.
However, scores from at least one of these standardized tests are required for Honors admission.

When do I need to choose a major?

Indicate a major on your application to receive the appropriate information from JWU.

If you want to change your major prior to enrolling, contact Admissions before the start of the term.

What happens after I submit my application?

  1. Admissions will process your admissions file.
  2. An evaluation will be completed by an admissions officer.
  3. We will contact you if there is a need to receive any additional documentation.
  4. Once all documents are received, Admissions will evaluate your admissions file and inform you of the decision.

What type of accreditation does JWU have?

JWU is accredited by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC).

How much does it cost to apply to JWU?

There is no fee when applying to Johnson & Wales University.

What is the application deadline for admission?

JWU accepts applications on a rolling basis, so there is no deadline to apply. However, you are encouraged to submit your application along with applicable high school and college transcripts as early as possible.

What criteria are needed for admission?

In addition to your completed application, you must also submit

  1. Official college transcripts from all previously attended colleges
  2. High school transcripts and proof of high school completion

If you are currently attending another college, it is your responsibility to have updated transcripts sent to JWU as soon as the final grades become available (or within the first term of enrollment).

What are the criteria for transferring credits?

Transfer credit evaluations are based on previous college work as it relates to your intended field of study.
Credit is usually granted for courses completed with a grade of “C” or better (with a numeric value of 2.00) at another accredited institution (recognized by the U.S. Department of Education).
Grades of “pass” are also acceptable for transfer if credit was awarded (and a grade of “P” has the numeric value of 2.00 or greater).
Credits earned in developmental and remedial courses or CEUs are nontransferable.

What if I am interested in more than one campus?

You only need to apply once; acceptance to the university is valid at any campus, unless otherwise specified for certain majors.

How is the school year at JWU structured?

We enroll classes in terms for:

  • September
  • December
  • March 

Certain programs also accept applicants for the June term. Contact your campus of interest to inquire.

What financial information do I need to send?

Are you entering in any term other than September? If so, you must submit a financial aid transcript from every school you attended after high school – even if you did not receive aid at the other school(s).

Contact the financial aid office at each school and request that they forward an official financial aid transcript to JWU’s Student Financial Services.

  • Students transferring from other colleges
  • College graduates

What is the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)?

The following students attending JWU are required to have health insurance coverage that is accepted in the United States (and the state in which the student attends class):

  • All international, registered, undergraduate day students
  • All domestic, registered, undergraduate day students
  • All students enrolled in the Physician Assistant Studies degree program
  • All international graduate/doctoral students
  • All students enrolled in Counseling MS program

All students who are required to have health insurance are initially enrolled in and charged for SHIP.

Opt Out
If you have health insurance coverage through another means (i.e. a parent’s health insurance or an employer program), you can opt out of SHIP by demonstrating proof of coverage:

Complete University Health Plan’s waiver

IMPORTANT: Before waiving SHIP, be sure that your current health insurance plan is accepted in the state in which you attend class and fully covers all your medical needs.

You must submit a new waiver form each academic year. Students who are required to have health insurance and do not waive the JWU plan will be charged for it.

Is the Admission Promise program for me?

If you plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree after you finish your associate degree, then this program may be right for you.

If you want a Johnson & Wales University degree but think you cannot afford it, then the Admission Promise may help you achieve your dream by providing a guaranteed path to transfer. Meet the Admission Promise requirements, and JWU guarantees to welcome you as a junior transfer student.

If you are undecided about your major, the Admission Promise may still be good for you; your JWU advisor, as well as your community college advisor, can suggest majors that lead to careers that fit your talents and goals.

If you want to complete your college education efficiently and earn your bachelor’s degree from a university that combines academics, hands-on training and work experience tied to a field of study then the Admission Promise is a good choice for you.

JWU provides high quality undergraduate programs, opportunities for leadership opportunities and career development.

Financial aid and some scholarship programs are available.

Do I qualify for the Admission Promise program?

You must be a first time-freshman in your first semester at one of the 13 Colorado Community Colleges.

A first-time freshman is defined as having no college credit enrollments after graduation from high school or after earning a GED.

There are no high school GPA or ACT/SAT test requirements to participate in this program.

Once you are admitted to the Admission Promise program, your continued participation depends on meeting its requirements.

How is the Admission Promise different from other transfer options?

The Admission Promise will provide you with regular contact with a JWU advisor to ensure you are on-track to earn your associate degree and transfer to JWU as a junior.

JWU majors have pre-requisites — courses that are essential foundations for advanced study in each particular field. Your Admission Promise advisor can help you select community college classes in core disciplines (social sciences, arts and humanities, math, science, etc.) that will best fit the requirements of your chosen major at JWU.

Selecting these community college courses will provide you with a solid foundation in the skills and knowledge areas you will need to succeed in pursuing a bachelor's degree.

In addition, your community college advisor will help you select the courses you need to earn your AA or AS degree. So you will have two advisors who will support and assist you in reaching your goals.

As an Admission Promise participant, you will be invited to the JWU campus for workshops about the services and programs that will be available to you as a JWU student. You will have a chance to meet faculty and students in your chosen field while you are attending the community college.

How do I register for the Admission Promise?

First, apply online to one of the 13 Colorado community colleges. Each application has a link to the Admission Promise program — simply check the box to indicate your interest in participating in the program.

If you have already been accepted at a participating community college and are a first-time freshman, the admissions and records office at your community college will have the necessary form for you to complete.

What if I’ve already completed my online community college application?

If you have already completed your application to a participating community college for the Fall 2013 term and are a first-time freshman, you may still register your intent to participate in the JWU Admission Promise program.

To do so, go to the admissions and records office at your community college to complete the necessary form no later than Mar 15, 2014.

Note: this manual process is only available to students who are first-time freshmen and who have completed the online application for the Fall 2013 or Spring 2014 terms.

Can I still transfer to JWU if I didn’t sign up for this program?

If you didn't sign up for the program during the application process, or you previously attended college, you can still transfer to JWU.

The university has joint agreements with the Colorado Community College System to assist with student transfer.

Talk with your community college advisor for other transfer options if you don't qualify for the Admission Promise. In addition, JWU’s Admissions office will advise you about transferring to the university to complete a baccalaureate degree.

Once I complete my associate degree, am I automatically admitted to JWU?

Yes, so long as you have met the requirements of the Admission Promise agreement.

As you transition to the university, you will continue to receive advising help. By the time you complete your associate degree, you will have:

  • Visited JWU
  • Met faculty in your major
  • Learned about the pace and expectations of university coursework
  • Become familiar with the student services available to you.

The Admission Promise goal is to help you transition smoothly from your community college to JWU and achieve your goal of a bachelor’s degree.

Can I still attend JWU if I don’t meet the GPA requirements/terms of the Promise?

Yes, you may be able to. As long as you meet JWU’s transfer admission requirements, you may be admitted as a regular transfer student.

How much does the Admission Promise program cost?

There is no charge for participating in the program; JWU advisors provide help free of charge.

You are responsible for paying the tuition and fees charged at your community college – and, after transfer, paying tuition at JWU.
