I find that drawing on my past experience is what works best with freshmen to explain why our curriculum is relatable and will be relevant for them.“

Bio

In my 11th year teaching at JWU, I value the rewarding outcomes of preparing the future leaders of the hospitality industry. I received my BA in English from UNC-CH before realizing my dream of becoming a chef. I enrolled at CIA and earned an AOS degree in Culinary Arts after my time at UNC. Most of my 12 years of restaurant experience was in fine dining, independent restaurants, and for one, in coastal NC, I was the owner and chef. I find that drawing on my past experience is what works best with freshmen to explain why our curriculum is relatable and will be relevant for them.

My strength as a teacher is in that I create learner-centered activities that engage students and enhance their understanding of difficult material. I choose to create an atmosphere that emphasizes the importance of knowing how to correct something that may not be perfect every time. In our industry, it is not a matter of whether things will go wrong; they absolutely will go wrong at the worst possible time; what is important is how one handles it.
