Community Service and Volunteerism

“I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” –Albert Schweitzer

Community Service is an ideal way to give selflessly of yourself and your time. At JWU, service to the community is encouraged through classes, student organizations and by the student body as a whole. Our student organizations provide countless hours of service to our community.

Past community service partners have included YMCA, the United Way, Boys and Girls Club, Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, and North Miami Parks & Recreation, among others.

Major service projects happen throughout the academic year. Notable projects have included:

Join! Work! Unite! is an annual celebration of National Public Lands Day in which roughly 500 JWU students, faculty and staff partner with the city of North Miami's Parks & Recreation Department to clean up the city's green spaces.

The Big Chef, Little Chef program pairs students from nearby W.J. Bryan Elementary School with JWU mentors in order to learn about nutrition, food preparation and etiquette.

The Federal Community Work Study Program gives eligible students a chance to pay for their college education while working at local nonprofits. Contact Student Employment at 305-892-7039 to find out more.

If you’re interested in food, special functions events such as the Miami Wine & Food Festival and Taste of the Nation give you an opportunity to benefit the greater North Miami community. Sign-up sheets are available at the bulletin board in front of Flamingo Hall. For more information, call the Culinary Administration office at 305-892-7027.

If you or a club you represent have recently participated in a community service project, you can report your goals and service hours by filling out this Project Report Form (52K PDF).
