Valerie Balkun has been teaching required core courses in JWU's English department and several in the Humanities department for more than 30 years.

In the past, she has served as adjunct faculty coordinator and interim department chair in English. Having expertise in workplace/business writing, for many years Balkun trained both Rhode Island state employees and JWU employees in the Employee Development Program in effective writing and communication.

Balkun has presented in many capacities at Johnson & Wales and externally on classroom management and active teaching techniques, most recently on WISE criticism at the Hawaii International Conference on Education, and was awarded the honor of Master Teacher and Teacher of the Year several years ago.
