Call to Action: North Miami Campus Continues Dorian Relief Efforts

Hurricane Dorian caused catastrophic damages to the Bahamas this past September. As the scale of destruction became clear, the JWU North Miami community — which includes a large number of native Bahamian students, many of whom were personally impacted by the storm — sprang into action. Under the direction of North Miami Campus President Larry Rice, the Campus Leadership Team quickly endorsed and activated a Hurricane Dorian relief drive to assist the affected community.

The response from the campus community was remarkable. The efforts brought together a long list of necessary items including toilet paper, water, first aid kits, canned non-perishable goods, blankets and diapers. Most important, the efforts galvanized the Wildcat community and brought out the best in our students.

Four Bahamian students from the North Miami Campus took ownership of the campaign and helped deliver all donated items collected:

• Andy Farrington
• Movavee Ferguson
• Sarah Russell

The students were able to personally deliver the cargo to the county-controlled relief headquarters in Miami.

Help Us Make a Difference
While the North Miami Campus escaped the full Category 5 force of Dorian, many of the Bahamian student body are now wondering if they will be able to fulfill their dream of graduating from JWU.

To assist these students, we have set up the JWU Dorian Relief Scholarship Fund. As active members of this community, it is our duty and responsibility to assist in these critical times as these students, and the Bahamian nation, begin the long process of recovery.
