Bank of America Summer Bridge Program
Empowering the Success of First-Generation Students
Thanks to generous funding from Bank of America’s Economic Outreach Program, JWU Charlotte’s Summer Bridge program is designed to help incoming first-year students build a strong foundation for college success. This specialized initiative primarily serves first-generation students and students from traditionally underserved high schools within a 75-mile radius of Charlotte.
Summer Bridge is a dynamic summer transition experience that introduces students to college life through first-year experience workshops, engaging programming and hands-on activities in an inclusive and affirming environment. JWU Charlotte proudly celebrates the diversity of student experiences and honors the resilience, strength and legacy of first-generation students.
Program Details
The program follows a cohort model, meaning students begin the experience as part of a small, close-knit group that stays together throughout the program and continues beyond the summer. As the fall and spring semesters begin, students will meet monthly with their Summer Bridge cohort, fostering lasting connections while continuing to strengthen academic, personal and professional skills.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Summer Bridge program, you must:
- Reside within 75 miles of Charlotte*
- Apply to and be accepted by JWU
- File a 2027-28 FAFSA
*Reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
How to Apply
Once you are accepted to JWU, you should see the Summer Bridge program in your application portal to-do list if you are eligible. Follow the directions in the portal to apply for the program. You will be notified if you have been selected via email.

Yes! Summer Bridge is a fully funded program for participants – housing, meals, activities, transportation to and from activities and supplies are all included.
Eligible students will receive a personal invitation from JWU to participate in the program.
Yes. Students who will be living off campus for the academic year can still participate in Summer Bridge if you meet the eligibility requirements.
Yes, you must be an incoming first-year student for the upcoming academic year to participate in Summer Bridge.
Yes, if you are living on campus for the academic year, you will be moving into an actual residence hall room. You must complete your housing application, submit your health forms and be financially cleared by July 14.
Priority application deadline is July 4; however, rolling admission continues until August 1.
Since the program is only for one week, students are not allowed to go home on the weekends. We would like for students to fully engage in the program.
During Summer Bridge, students are not encouraged to work. There will be evening and weekend activities.
Please do not bring a car until the start of the semester. All transportation will be provided to students during the duration of the program.
