Career Explorations: What to Bring

To make your visit to JWU more enjoyable, you should bring:

• Pillow
• Sleeping bag or blanket and bed linen for XL twin-sized bed
• Spending money for souvenirs or additional snacks at evening excursions (optional)
• Cell phone and charger (all students are required to have their own working and charged cell phone at all times)
• Towels and washcloths
• Toiletries, including soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.
• Comfortable shoes and socks
• Sweatshirt or jacket
• Athletic wear/sneakers
• Clothing for each day of the program, including appropriate attire for academic activities (see below)

What to Wear at CX

At all academic activities, you must follow JWU dress code, uniform and grooming guidelines. You cannot wear casual attire in the classroom, or you will not be allowed into class. At non-academic activities and during evening activities, you can wear casual clothes of your choice.

Non-CFIT Program Dress Code

For the programs in animal science, criminal justice, design, health and hospitality, use the following guidelines to dress professionally throughout your time at CX.

For Academic Experiences, you are expected to dress and act like currently enrolled students. Business casual dress is appropriate: Think ironed pants, skirts, collared shirts, crisp blouses and comfortable shoes.

• Ironed shirts (buttoned or collared)
• Slacks or chinos
• Dress shirt; ironed pants or skirt
• Comfortable dress shoes
• NO sneakers or jeans

Casual attire is acceptable for registration and evening activities.

CFIT Program Dress Code

You do not need to be in uniform when you arrive. At non-academic activities and during evening activities, you can wear casual clothes of your choice. 

During your Academic Experiences, you are expected to act like students currently enrolled in the Culinary Arts or Baking & Pastry Arts program. Adhere to the following uniform and grooming guidelines to maintain a professional appearance during labs. Please note that there are no exceptions, and any student who does not follow these guidelines will not be allowed into the classes.

• Plain, white T-shirt (no logos)
• Chef coat (optional)
• Pants: Black dress pants, khakis or plain/checker chef pants (no shorts, jeans, yoga pants or sweatpants)
• Socks: Plain white crew (must reach over ankles, no stripes or emblems)
• Black (or dark), closed-toe, flat shoes (non-skid, non-slip preferred; we prefer no tennis shoes)
• Fingernails clipped short, with no nail polish
• No jewelry, earrings, necklace, rings, watch, etc.
• Hair must be pulled back and secured (we can provide hair nets for participants who cannot easily tie back or secure their hair)
• You will be provided with a chef’s hat and apron, which you must wear

CFIT Grooming Guidelines

• Be clean shaven
• Sideburns must be clipped 1-inch above the earlobes
• Fingernails must be kept short and immaculately clean
• No nail polish, artificial nails, make-up or perfume/cologne
• Cuts, wounds, scratches or skin blemishes from fingertips to forearm must be protected by soft, white cotton bandages or latex gloves provided by the university
• No hand, facial or otherwise visible jewelry
