Biography

Andrew Mackie, MSPAS, PA-C, has been a physician assistant for 35 years, with a clinical career built around hospital medicine, cardiology, and critical care.

He earned a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in natural science from Harvard University, completed the Physician Associate Program at Yale University School of Medicine, and later earned a Master of Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Nebraska.

Mackie began his clinical career in hospital medicine at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, then spent a decade in cardiology with University Cardiology Foundation in Providence. He then moved to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he practiced in the intensive care unit and later in hospital medicine, providing bedside care during the early and middle phases of the pandemic. Alongside patient care, he has focused on patient safety, the organization of clinical care systems, and the development of clinical practice guidelines. He has led teams in both academic and clinical settings.

He has taught PAs for nearly twenty years, starting as a faculty member of the UMass Memorial PA Critical Care Residency. He served as assistant professor and academic coordinator in the JWU PA Program from 2013 to 2015, and spent eleven years as associate clinical professor in the Northeastern University PA Program. He returned to JWU in 2026 as associate professor and principal faculty.

Outside of work, Mackie is an avid birder and bird photographer who has traveled across the United States and abroad to find and photograph birds.
