Lynn Tripp (she/her)
Associate Professor College of Food Innovation & Technology Department of Interdisciplinary Food Studies Providence
Biography
Lynn Tripp is an associate professor of Food Science and a leader in Culinary Science & Product Development at Johnson & Wales University’s College of Food Innovation & Technology. For more than two decades, she has worked to bring the worlds of food science, culinary arts, product development, and industry, together, helping prepare students to become the scientists, chefs, product developers, and innovators who will shape the future of food.
Tripp’s philosophy is rooted in a simple but urgent idea: we must always be looking ahead. The future of food will require more than creating products that taste good. It will require thoughtful solutions to some of the world’s most complex challenges — feeding a growing global population, improving nutrition, developing sustainable food systems, using ingredients and resources responsibly, and creating foods that meet the changing needs of consumers.
Her teaching challenges students to combine scientific understanding with culinary creativity and to move beyond asking how something works to asking why — and, ultimately, what comes next. Whether students are studying ingredient functionality, sensory science, food processing, sustainability, or commercial product development, Tripp emphasizes evidence-based thinking, curiosity, experimentation, and the ability to translate an idea from the kitchen into a product that can succeed in the real world.
She played a lead role in shaping JWU’s Culinary Science & Product Development curriculum and has developed and taught courses including Food Science, Baking Science, Food Ingredient Technology, Food Processing, and Food Product Design & Development. She also developed the original prototype for Sustainability in the Culinary Kitchen, encouraging students to examine the environmental, scientific, economic, and social forces that influence today’s food system while supporting their conclusions with credible evidence.
Industry engagement is central to Tripp’s approach to education. She has been actively involved with the Research Chefs Association (RCA), an organization that brings culinary arts and food science together through the discipline of Culinology®. Her work with RCA and other industry organizations helps connect students directly with emerging ingredients, technologies, companies, product-development challenges, and career opportunities.
Tripp has mentored generations of students through national food product development and Culinology® competitions. As faculty advisor to the RCA Student Culinology® Competition Team and subsequent student competition teams, her students earned numerous national first- and second-place finishes, including first-place victories in 2008, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2021. She also served for many years as faculty advisor to the JWU Food Science Club, creating additional opportunities for students to engage with the food industry beyond the classroom.
At the center of Tripp’s work is the belief that food professionals have an extraordinary opportunity — and responsibility — to help determine what the next generation of food will look like. Her goal is not simply to teach students what the food industry is doing today, but to prepare them to ask the questions, develop the products, and create the solutions the world will need tomorrow.
“Understanding food science for a chef is much like knowing how to read music for a musician. With years of practice, a musician can learn to play an instrument, just as a chef can learn to cook — but understanding the language behind the craft changes everything. For a chef, food science is that language. It provides a deeper understanding of not only how food works, but why — and will make all the difference in the world.”
