What is Animal Science?
In JWU Providence’s Animal Science bachelor of science program, you will study how animal biology, nutrition, behavior, genetics, reproduction, health and welfare shape the care and management of domestic and captive species. The program combines science coursework with laboratory, field and experiential learning across multiple animal-focused settings.
Choose a general course of study or focus your education through the Pre-Veterinary Studies or Equine specialization. Through hands-on coursework, internships and other approved applied experiences, you can build practical skills while preparing for animal science careers or advanced study in veterinary and related fields.

Gain Real World Animal Science Experience
Develop practical skills through experiences that connect animal science concepts with animal care, facilities and professional settings.
Depending on the course, pathway and approved opportunity, JWU students may:
- Practice animal handling, husbandry, health maintenance, nutrition and welfare skills across multiple species.
- Use anatomical models, mammalian specimens and diagnostic imaging in anatomy and physiology laboratory work.
- Complete internships with approved animal science-focused organizations.
- Participate in undergraduate research, field experiences or eligible study abroad opportunities.
- Connect classroom learning with regional experiences such as visiting Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University or interning at Save the Bay.
Hailey Sangillo ’27
A Coastal Ecology class took Hailey Sangillo out on Narragansett Bay to test water quality with Save The Bay — and connected her to the people who later hired her as an intern. She spent the summer at Save The Bay’s aquarium in Newport, teaching visitors about native Rhode Island species and building care pages for every animal in the collection. Animal Science requires two internships, and this was her first.
Animal Science Careers & Graduate Study
An Animal Science bachelor’s degree can support entry-level opportunities across animal care, research, agriculture, health, welfare and equine settings or prepare you for graduate study.

The Biology Lab
In the Biology Lab, Animal Science students learn the fundamentals of biology and examine animals through dissection and microscopic study.

Hands-On Animal Science Learning at Tufts University
Animal Science students taking the Domestic Animal Anatomy and Physiology Lab course recently visited Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine to participate in laboratory rotations, including a Small & Large Animal Anatomy lab and Wildlife Anatomy lab.

Veterinary technology programs prepare students for credentialed veterinary technician roles and have separate accreditation and licensing requirements. Yes. JWU publishes technical standards related to safe animal handling, physical and environmental requirements, protective practices and health risks. Rabies vaccination is strongly encouraged for some coursework and may be required by an external internship or field site.
