Field Relevant Learning
Located in JWU Providence’s Downcity Campus, the John Hazen White College of Arts & Sciences features specialized learning spaces that foster hands-on, field-relevant experiences. From biology, computer science and design labs to the Cybersecurity Center and its cyber labs, students access state-of-the-art equipment to engage in real-world experiences. John Hazen White Center
30 Chestnut Street, Providence
Here you’ll find classrooms for Arts & Sciences programs such English, Humanities, Mathematics and Social Sciences, as well as the language laboratory and offices for the dean and faculty. New for Fall 2026 is an Animal Science classroom with space for anatomical models. The Center for Student Research & Interdisciplinary Collaboration is housed on the first floor.
TACO Center
10 Abbott Park Place, Providence
Home for hands-on media and communications labs, as well as classrooms and faculty offices for the economics and science departments.
- Center for Media Production: This hands-on hub for filmmaking, journalism, photography and audio production features two light-controlled photo and video studios, a soundproof podcasting suite, 24 Mac Pro workstations with professional editing and creative software, two specialized editing suites for post-production editing and assembling media projects, a writer’s room and access to a 4K projector, screen and top-tier photography and video equipment.
- Criminal Justice Lab and Adaptable Crime Scene Staging Room: Together, the lab and staging room feature forensic microscopes, 20 student workstations, and specialized equipment for evidence collection, fingerprinting, blood spatter analysis and bullet trajectory research.
John J. Bowen Center for Science and Innovation
75 Chestnut Street, Providence
This LEED-certified, 71,000-square-foot building contains biology, chemistry, engineering and robotics labs; design spaces; a lecture hall and meeting spaces, as well as a Faraday cage-equipped computer science lab.
Innovation Lab: The lab’s high-end 3D printers, laser engravers and other tools of the trade allow students from any major to master the latest digital fabrication techniques.
Alan Shawn Feinstein Technology & Design Center: This hub is where design and engineering students gather to complete real-world projects for local nonprofits, gaining experiential skills in web development, video production, digital design and more.
Science Labs: The biology and chemistry labs are where you do the science yourself. You’ll dissect specimens, grow microbial cultures, extract and analyze DNA, and study cells and tissues under a microscope. Students who want to go further can join faculty research.
Cybersecurity Center: This National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE)-recognized center contains a Launch Cybersecurity Lab where students conduct network forensics investigations, perform malicious code analysis and reverse-engineer software. Students and professionals alike train in the Faraday cage, which blocks electromagnetic fields so they can research, test and build applications without interference.
Learning in Action
Labs are where our majors come to life. In the Bowen Center, biology students learn data collection and analysis, dissection and microscopic study, while Design students work with real clients on real deliverables. In the TACO Center, Media & Communication students refine their podcasting skills, and Criminal Justice students analyze crime scenes.
