Living-Learning Communities
In a Living-Learning Community, you live with other first-year students in your college. You’ll take some of the same classes, study together and meet faculty from your program at events on your own floor. Students who join an LLC tend to earn better grades and are more likely to stay at JWU, largely because they build a group of people early.

JWU Charlotte offers the following Living-Learning Communities.
College of Food Innovation & Technology
For first-year students in the College of Food Innovation & Technology. You’ll live with classmates who are in the same labs and lecture halls you are, which makes late-night study sessions a matter of walking down the hall. Faculty host industry events and social gatherings throughout the year, and an upper-level RA from your college is on the floor to answer the questions you don’t want to ask a professor yet.
College of Hospitality & Business
For students enrolled in the College of Hospitality & Business. This is an academically focused floor, which means the programming is built around your major rather than added on top of it — you’re living with people studying what you’re studying. Faculty from your college run ongoing programs throughout the year, so you’ll get to know the people teaching you in a setting that isn’t a classroom. Floor residents present programs, too, so what happens in the community is partly yours to shape.
How to join
Space is limited. Indicate your interest on your housing application and select the community you want. Living here means showing up: LLC activities and community outreach projects are part of the deal.

What you’ll get out of it
- Classes and floor life connect. Programming on your floor ties back to what you’re studying, and you’re doing it with people in the same courses.
- You’ll know people fast. Living together means the study group, the dining hall table and the group chat form on their own.
- Faculty become people you know. You’ll see faculty from your college at floor events and community gatherings, not just office hours.
- The first year gets easier. Programming starts early and keeps going, so you land in a group of students and faculty who share your interests before the semester gets hard.
Living Learning Communities (LLCs) are specialized living environments that connect first-year students’ inside- and outside-the-classroom experiences. Each LLC is unique but is centered on an academic interest area. Students who choose to live in an LLC directly connect to their classroom experience, access to intentional events and programs, and dedicated faculty members who work to make the community a success.
Students will be part of a close-knit community that supports academic success, cultivates safe and supportive environments, encourages personal growth, fosters social responsibility, and develops leaders here at JWU Charlotte and beyond.
All students are welcome to live in a Living Learning Community regardless of identity or background. All you need is a passion for making your community a successful and enjoyable experience!
LLCs are ideal for making friends with peers who have similar academic interests. Research shows that students who participate in an LLC have higher academic success rates, higher college graduation rates, higher levels of satisfaction with their college experience, and an easier time connecting with their peers.
There is no additional cost for a Living Learning Community. However, students living in LLCs will be required to attend outside-of-the-classroom activities, including but not limited to campus events, workshops, study sessions, and meetings with faculty.
