Introduction to Career Management
All first year students take Career Management (ICM). This 1.5 credit course
is taught by career coaches. Students:
• are introduced to DACUM charts as tools for goal-setting.
• discuss employer selection and recruitment methods to emphasize the role
of competencies in hiring, training and evaluating career progression.
• learn how to write a resume, cover letter and reference sheet.
• learn interviewing and job-search skills.
• are introduced to trends in the workplace, to prepare hands-on learning
experiences.
• learn to use career management and job-search system, eRecruiting.
It is accessible to students (university-wide), alumni and employers 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week.

i am an older non-traditional student. Can I test out
of Introduction to Career Management (CAR 1003)? what are the criteria to
be granted life experience for this course and what is the application process? You
will need to obtain an application packet for Life Experience credits from
your
Registrar's Office, complete it and return it to the Registrar's Office.
Eligibility requirements:

five years of relevant work experience in the same area as the major you
are pursuing.
·
resume must fulfill University requirements, and must be done without assistance
from any of the CDO staff; to determine person is capable of writing a good
resume autonomously; otherwise, you will need to take the course.
·
must be a student in The Hospitality College or the College of Business.
·
eligible to apply only in your freshman or junior year.
·
if you have already enrolled in CAR1003 or dropped the course, it is too
late to apply for life credits.

why do I have to take this course and why during my freshmen year? Isn't that too early to start thinking graduation or full-time employment? An early introduction to Career Management introduces students to the expectations today's employers have of college graduates. It exposes students to current employment practices and how you can use them to your benefit for stronger employment opportunity and career longevity. This intro course is for freshmen students or first trimester students to provide an opportunity to participate in all Career Development programs and practice marketing and researching skills prior to graduation and hunting for full-time positions. Students have the ability to practice the skills learned in PD1003 during their freshmen and sophomore year. The end result is a less stressful graduation year.
what are some of the topics covered during the CAR1003? Some topics covered: CDO services and programs, using the Career Passport System and creating a career portfolio, researching companies, interviewing, evaluation of job offers, resume and cover letter preparation, creating and marketing your skills and qualifications to future employers.
is Intro to Career Management a full credit course? The course is counted toward your degree as a 1.5 credit course that is averaged in to your final GPA as a graduation requirement.
why are students only allowed 1 absence in the Intro to Career Management class, instead of 3 like the other classes? Intro to Career Management class meets only 2 times a week and is a 1.5 credit class. Other classes meet 4 times a week and are 4.5 credits. It is University policy that the attendance policy is enforced, 1 absence for a 2.0 or less credit class.
