Experiential education is a key component of the Johnson & Wales University brand. To that end, the University offers programs designed to give you the opportunity to develop skills and competencies in the workplace to augment the content knowledge of your profession gained in the classrooms and laboratories of the school. The key programs offered by the Bissell Career Development Office are the Cooperative Education Program (Co-op) and the Externship Program.
Co-op is an academic program that integrates classroom study with career-related professional training. The program allows you to gain practical work experience while earning academic credit towards your degree.
Externship is a mandatory academic program for specified
majors (hotel management, food & beverage management, marketing, restaurant
management, sports/entertainment/event management, and fashion merchandising)
that integrates classroom study with
career-related professional training. The program allows you to gain practical
work experience in several areas of industry while earning academic credit
towards your degree. Externship is designed to provide students with a comprehensive
knowledge of entire industry concepts. Students experience guaranteed rotations
in a variety of areas during these 11 weeks. This foundation positions a
student to focus on Best Fit Employment. A network of educators which closely
monitor the administration of the program are able to deliver the necessary
framework for student success. Externships are completed primarily in the
Charlotte metropolitan area and offer a variety of site options for participating
