All residence hall rooms are equipped with one phone line (telephone number/extension) and one voice mailbox on the university's telephone system. You or your roommate must provide an analog telephone. Plug your phone cord into the phone jack on the RIGHT-HAND wall of your room to utilize the phone system. ONLY the right-hand side phone jack will work. J&W is the customer of record for all telephone numbers in the residence halls. Students should make any network service provider aware of this before signing up for credit cards, 800 service, or pay-per-call services. Collect calls cannot be accepted. Students may want to purchase prepaid telephone calling cards for long distance usage prior to arrival on campus.
The campus has a very expansive “free” local calling area which includes the entire 704 area code as well as portions of the 828 area, 803 (South Carolina), and the 336 area codes. Ten-digit dialing (area code + 7-digit number) is required to reach any of the areas in the local calling zone.
Your residence hall room telephone number/extension will be provided to you by Residential Life during Move-In.
Initial Voice Mailbox Setup:
- Dial 2000 on your residence hall room phone
- Enter the initial default password (12345) and then press pound (#)
- Listen to instructions for enrollment, including recording a name and an outgoing greeting for callers
- Set a password between 4-20 digits which is easy for you and your roommate to remember and difficult for others to discover
- Listen for confirmation to complete set up. If you hang up without confirmation, set up is incomplete
