All students at Johnson & Wales University will participate in community service learning experiences prior to graduation. The goal of service learning is to facilitate life-long commitment to community service. Each student will work with a service organization over the course of one term. During this time, they not only volunteer their time but participate in academic discussions on the impact they are making in the community. Students frequently complete more than the required amount of hours as they develop a personal commitment to the organization they are working with.

The Community Leadership Institute collaborates with the academic leadership faculty, the community board, and service learning partners to consistently develop and assess student service learning projects. Presently, all students will complete the service learning experience in the Foundations of Leadership course which is required for all sophomore level students.
