On September 16, 2005, the Johnson & Wales University, Denver Campus held its 1st Annual Courage to Care Day. This day brought out 240 students, staff, faculty, alumni, community members, and friends for a morning of service and an afternoon of service celebration. In the past, we have sent out sophomores for their first day of class to participate in service projects. For the past two years, we invite everyone to participate and we have received an amazing response.
The response was not only amazing from our campus but from our community
as well. Last year our sponsors included: FastLane Productions, Inc.; The Rock Bottom Foundation; Double Tree Hotel; Comedy Works; Ikon; Colorado Campus Compact; Brother's BBQ; and South Philly Cheese Steaks. And
where would we be without the service sites. Last year we sent groups out
to these locations: The Food Bank of the Rockies, World Vision, Project C.U.R.E.,
Bluff Lake Nature Center, International Hearing Dogs Inc., Denver Parks & Rec.,
St. Joseph Hospital, YMCA CasaStart, Ashley and Philips Elementary, and The Rocky
Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. Everyone helped to make this day
special.
In one day our campus was able to contribute significantly to our community. With our 320 participants, we provided the community with over 1,440 hours worth of service. When you consider the dollar value of a volunteer hour, we put into to our community over $27,030. That alone in one day is spectacular!
This year, Courage to Care Day will be held on Friday, September 14, 2007 the second academic Friday of the new year. The goal for the day is to have 350 students, staff, faculty and community members participated in this day.
