After 20 years in the hospitality industry, Jennifer Gallagher decided she wanted to share her love of the industry with others and have an impact on those entering into the industry. She has had the pleasure of teaching both in the United States and abroad, on-ground, and online. She believes the hospitality industry provides endless career opportunities. Although food, wine and travel are her primary passions, she is just as passionate about sharing her experience and enthusiasm with the next generation of industry professionals.

Gallagher has been a full-time culinary instructor at JWU Charlotte since 2005 and the culinary department chair since 2014. In her role as department chair, she is able to assist both the student body and the faculty to ensure JWU Charlotte is providing everyone with the best possible experience.

Gallagher is a Certified Executive Chef (CEC) through the American Culinary Federation, a Certified Dietary Manager (CDM) through the Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professionals, a Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE) through the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute and a Certified Wine Educator (CWE) through the Society of Wine Educators. Gallagher also holds a Diploma Certificate in wines and spirits from the Wines & Spirit Education Trust.

Q&A with Jennifer

At JWU, education is not confined to the four walls of the classroom. You’re not going to spend four years with your nose buried in a book, learning theories you may never get a chance to apply — you’re going to get out there and apply them, be it through internships, group projects, leadership opportunities, competitions and more.

How Did You Get Started?

I started working in a restaurant as soon as I was old enough and fell in love with the industry from the first day.

What Is Your Favorite Teaching Moment?

Seeing the first group of students I taught in 2005 walk across the graduation stage to receive their A.S degree in 2007.

What Advice Do You Have For Incoming Freshmen?

Keep an open mind, make friends and make the most of every opportunity.
