Acclaimed Publisher, Education Champion Visits JWU North Miami

David Lawrence

After spending three decades in newspaper journalism as a reporter, editor and publisher — including award-winning stints at the Miami Herald and Detroit Free Press — David Lawrence Jr. dedicated his life to a new mission: making sure every child and young adult has a real chance to succeed in life.

Students from the College of Arts & Sciences had an opportunity to hear insights from Lawrence’s new book, “A Dedicated Life: Journalism, Justice and a Chance for Every Child.”

In 2010, Lawrence helped found The Children’s Movement of Florida, an organization launched in 2010 with the purpose of making children — particularly those of elementary-school age — the state’s top investment priority.

The session was hosted by JWU North Miami Dean of Academic Affairs Michelle Garcia and emceed by Associate Professor Michael Moskwa. Each student received a signed copy of the book.

In “A Dedicated Life,” Lawrence tells the story of his time at the Free Press and the Herald up to his “retirement” at 56, when he transitioned into his new calling and began making significant strides in Florida’s pre-K programs, parent skill-building, and so much more.

Of his JWU visit, Lawrence noted, “I came away once again energized by really great students, plus an administration focused on helping each of them succeed in school and in life. Johnson & Wales is a very special place.”
