JWU Recognized by U.S. News for Innovation, Value, Veterans

Each fall, U.S. News & World Report releases its Best Colleges rankings to help students and their families identify the colleges that best meet their needs.

Once again, both Johnson & Wales University campuses have been recognized in multiple categories of this prestigious annual report in recognition of what JWU offers students and their families. Here are JWU’s new U.S. News rankings for the 2023-2024 academic year:

Best Value

With 98.5% of students attending classes on the Providence Campus and Charlotte Campus receiving financial aid from JWU, it’s no secret that Johnson & Wales is committed to helping students afford their college degree.

For the 2023-24 academic year, both of JWU’s locations continue to be recognized by U.S. News as Best Value schools. According to the ranking methodology, Best Value colleges are "schools that are above average academically and cost considerably less than many other schools when the financial aid that they dispense in the form of need-based grants and scholarships is taken into account."

JWU’s Providence Campus rose 10 spots over last year, ranking #36 out of 73 schools in the Best Value for Regional Universities, North category, while JWU’s Charlotte Campus moved up one spot over last year to #13 on the list of schools ranked in the Regional Colleges, South category.

Most Innovative Schools

JWU's Providence Campus ranked #17 among Regional Universities, North for Most Innovative in recognition of its cutting-edge programming.

For this designation, U.S. News & World Report asked top college officials to identify institutions in their Best Colleges ranking category that are making the most innovative improvements in terms of curriculum, faculty, students, campus life, technology or facilities, all with the goal of "spotlighting schools that are making cutting-edge developments on their campuses."

This year, JWU’s Providence Campus ranks #17 in the list of Most Innovative Schools in the Regional Universities, North division.

Best Colleges for Veterans

JWU Charlotte has ranked #5 in Best Colleges for Veterans out of all schools in the Regional Colleges, South category, which recognizes “top-ranked schools that make pursuing a college education more affordable for veterans and active-duty service members.”

Johnson & Wales provides military and veteran students at both campuses with academic counseling, career counseling, tutoring, disability accommodations, free and confidential personal counseling, personal financial planners to help navigate the GI Bill and more. JWU’s Providence Campus also offers an Army ROTC program with Military Science courses. Learn more on JWU's military and veterans website.

Best Regional Schools

There are many criteria to consider in a college, so for decades U.S. News & World Report has reviewed and ranked the overall best schools compared to their regional peers.

Because JWU’s two locations are different sizes, with over 4,500 students living and learning at JWU Providence and over 1,000 living and learning at JWU Charlotte, U.S. News ranks the campuses separately as a “regional university” and a “regional college.” Don’t be fooled, though, as both campuses are very much part of one JWU!

Continuing its upward climb in the Regional Universities, North category, JWU’s Providence Campus has moved up one spot over last year, to #69 out of the 167 universities ranked in this category.

Regional Universities are defined as higher education institutions that provide a range of undergraduate programs and some master's-level programs. The North region includes Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.

JWU’s Charlotte Campus continues to remain in the top quarter of ranked colleges in the Regional Colleges, South category, placing at #24 out of 99 ranked spots.

Regional colleges are defined as institutions that focus primarily on undergraduate education but grant fewer than 50% of their degrees in liberal arts disciplines. The South region includes Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Arkansas and Kentucky.
